Memphians seem to have a very unique sense of humor. We like observing and commenting, especially on things that make Memphis, well, Memphis. The city’s got a thriving local comedy scene made up of improvisers and stand up comedians.
I went to see Memphis comedians Mo Alexander, Andy Flemming and Dominic Dierkes do stand up at [...]
Check another thing off the scavenger hunt list!
Pouncer the Tiger, the University of Memphis mascot, came up to section 209 at the FedEx Forum during Memphis’s game against Southeastern Missouri State University.
Thank you to the nice guy who snapped the picture for me!
(By the way, the Tigers trounced SEMU, 87 – 57.)
Don’t bring any jinxes over here, because I’ve got a bottle of Jinx Remover and I know how to use it.
I stopped by A. Schwab on Beale Street a few days ago to pick up the little bottle (and some allegedly lucky candles) for the scavenger hunt.
A. Schwab is a really interesting place. It’s a [...]
I picked up a bag of Ugly Mug’s First Cup whole bean coffee at the Midtown Schnucks a few days ago. The label on the front says it’s “even bodied” with “berry overtones”. It also apparently makes a good first impression (which is just what I look for in my coffee).
Ugly Mug makes their fair trade coffee on Old Getwell Rd. in Memphis and they sell their coffee (as well as hot chocolate and tea) online, at Memphis grocery stores, and in restaurants and coffee shops across the U.S.
Since both Ugly Mug Coffee and a Piggly Wiggly receipt are on my scavenger hunt list, I had this brilliant idea that I would go to the Piggly Wiggly (aka the Pig), buy a pound of Saving Grace or Southern Pecan and then keep the receipt, taking care of two scavenger hunt items with one [...]
Is it strange to anyone else that the street musicians I’ve come across are all from out of town? Tin Pan was from New York, and Wyndham is from North Carolina. Do musicians here just not busk? Am I missing something?
I had forgotten how awesome it is to be surrounded by people who are creating things. I’m pretty sure that I got more done on the scarf that I’m working on in 90 minutes at Social Club than I’ve ever managed to get done in one sitting.
During Social Club, the Five-in-One store is open. This is totally my new favorite place to shop in Memphis. They sell hand screen printed t-shirts (many of them Memphis themed), jewelry, stuffed animals, catnip mice, greeting cards, hoodies and stickers.
Mr. Bingle appeared in window displays, advertisements and puppet shows at the stores. He also had a theme song and was sold as a stuffed animal and figurine. Take a good look at him. He’s got almost none of the traditional snowman parts – there’s no carrot nose, and the coal eyes have been replaced by slightly creepy and vacant blue orbs. He’s wearing what appears to be an upside down ice cream cone. He also has two holly leaves coming out of his back like wings.
Walking back to work with one of my scavenger hunt finds.
That’s me in the blue helmet in my Memphis Roller Derby shirt. I’m Lady Problems, #404, and I skate for the Women of Mass Destruction.
Tomorrow, Memphis Roller Derby’s all-star travel team, the Hustlin’ Rollers, are playing in the Southern Fried Smackdown regional tournament in Atlanta. The Hustlin Rollers are made up of girls from each of the league’s three home teams.
