Ben Vaughn’s new restaurant Au Fond opened yesterday in Cooper Young (right next door to his other restaurant, Grace).
I stopped by Soul Fish Cafe on Cooper around 12:30 this afternoon, thinking that I could beat most of the lunch rush. That didn’t quite work out the way I planned – the small cafe was completely packed. It didn’t take long to get seated, though.
Soul Fish has various kinds of catfish and chicken. There [...]
Here’s how ARTjamN works: Burgeoning artists come in to the spacious, airy studio and pick out a canvas. They then decide whether they want to create their own masterpiece or do a guided painting. (The guided paintings are sort of like catalog shopping – you pick the one you want, then you get instruction on how to create it.)
One of the best parts of eating at Beauty Shop in Cooper Young is that you’re eating in a building that used to be an actual beauty shop. There are all kinds of cool salon details – the hair-washing sinks at the bar, the hairdryer chairs, the booths tucked into the old salon booths, the huge curved mirror that the daily specials are written on. The themed decor doesn’t take itself too seriously or get overbearing.
This afternoon, I braved the rain to get my soup fix at Noodle Doodle Do (the lunchtime version of Do Sushi in Cooper-Young). At lunch, the small restaurant is way less crowded and a little bit more affordable (most of the soups are between $7-$10). They still serve appetizers and sushi and have bento box and spring roll specials at lunch.
Cooper Young’s newest eatery, Restaurant Grace is open. It’s in the old Sweet space on Cooper, next to Burke’s Books. They don’t have a menu up on their Web site yet, but here are some of the items mentioned on their Facebook page: basil ice cream, crawfish toast, scallop pappardella, rack of lamb, oysters, and halibut and grits. Yum.
Chef (and total wonder boy) Ben Vaughn managed to get the place up and running in less than a month. While they’re putting the final touches on everything, they’re having a “soft opening”. They’re open for lunch and dinner, Monday – Saturday.
This weekend is Goner Fest, the store’s 6th annual weekend-long music festival. They bring in rock’n'roll from all of the country for four days of shows at venues all over town. There are too many bands playing the festival for me to list here, but I’m most excited about seeing Davila 666, Msr. Jeffery Evans, King Louie One Man Band, the Reatards (Jay Reatard’s band) and the River City Tanlines (one of my all-time local favorites).
