The cool kids at Live From Memphis have been doing a series on people in Memphis that do cool things called “60 Seconds“. They’ve featured bands, dancers, rappers, and anyone that’s got something to say. They were kind enough to let me stop by their office and shoot my own “60 Seconds” video this afternoon.

Here’s a valuable life lesson: anytime you’re willingly going to be filmed talking, you should maybe think about what you’re going to say or do before the camera starts rolling. When I got to LFM, I had my roller skates and my I Love Memphis sign with me, and that’s it. No prepared remarks, no idea what to say, nothing.

My first take, I thought it would be cool to start dressed for work and talk about I Love Memphis and then gradually remove my work clothes until I was standing there wearing my derby clothes (that I had on under my skirt and sweater). This was a way better idea in theory than in practice. I got the sweater off alright but struggled to get my skirt off over my skates. If they decide to make a blooper reel, I’m fairly certain my awkward striptease (ending in a triumphant karate kick with skates on) will make the cut.

I managed to get a good take by the third try. I talked about the blog and derby and then I busted this really ridiculous dance move that y’all will be teasing me about for years to come.

When I got out of the shoot, I had a tweet from @norococo suggesting this for my shoot:

“@ilovememphis list off as many things you love about memphis in 60sec while unfolding your i love memphis sign and it’s revealed at end.”

That’s an awesome idea. So, I came home and made the video that I should have made for “60 Seconds”.
