A concert titled “Music of the People.” The ensemble will perform music that draws its influence from folk dances, folksong, jazz, and blues. The concert features legendary blues artist Blind Mississippi Morris and ends with the world premier of Micheal Shapiro’s Ol’ Mississippi Sings the Blues.

A few years ago, Shapiro spent a couple of days in Memphis working with the U of M Wind Ensemble on a performance of his Frankenstein – the Film Score. On his visit, he heard Blind Mississippi Morris performing at the Blues City Cafe. Captivated by the sound of Morris’s singing and fine harmonica playing, Shapiro decided to write Ol’ Mississippi Sings the Blues in honor of the great blues musician.

Other works include, Holst’s Second Suite in F, Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli, and Percy Grainger’s Molly on the Shore.
