A few days ago, I noticed Ecko Records while driving to Graceland. Their sign promises a shop full of soul, blues, gospel, and old school music. They’ve got a sign in the window that says “Ecko Records now open. Get in 2-Day 4 your party later!!” It sounded like my kind of place.
I made a [...]
The shop is R. Sole, and they carry hard-to-find, high-end and designer sneakers, clothing, sunglasses and watches. The space has the vibe of a fine art museum for footwear. A shoeseum, if you will. Colorful shoes pop against the dark walls and limited edition kicks given holy glows in light boxes around the store.
I owe this post to the awesome Memphis Facebook fan who suggested that I check out Spruce in East Memphis. I totally appreciate reader tips, especially when they lead me to tiny, colorful, out-of-the-way places that sell amazing jewelry and interesting home decor items.
Spruce is sort of the ultimate in hidden gems. It’s located on [...]
Memphis is a big fan of the “Be Nice or Leave” sentiment. There are signs like this hanging in restaurants, shops and offices all over the city, warning people that they need to get polite or get out. Most of the signs are handmade and hand painted and of a very specific Southern folk art style.
After lunch, I walked around the bookstore. Davis-Kidd is part of a small regional chain, but the store in the Laurelwood shopping center is very Memphis. There’s a large selection of books about Memphis history, culture, music and food and plenty of Memphis bands are represented in the music section.
I have a really hard time finding clothes that I like. It seems like it’s difficult to find casual, but really cool adult girl clothes that are more appropriate for work or errands than going to the club and I’ve all but given up on trying to shop for anything at the mall. Which is [...]
Like many of the best things in Memphis, the Jun Lee Trading Company doesn’t look like much from the outside. The windows are covered with panels, the building is painted in dingy whites and browns and the main entrance (and parking) are in the back of the building. But inside Jun Lee, it’s a totally [...]
A few nights ago, I noticed a new shop with a big grand opening sign on Madison between Second and Third. There were a few dresses in the window, including a tight, retro-inspired purple number that would look perfect on Joan Holloway.
I stopped in today to check it out. The shop has two rooms. The [...]
One thing that the owners of Thigh High Jeans want everyone to be clear on is that they’re a Memphis company. Their studio is located in downtown Memphis, they print “Made in Memphis” on all of their tags, and they recently got permission to use mayor A.C. Wharton’s “One Memphis” slogan on their custom-made reconstructed [...]
Second Editions is located just inside the Benjamin L. Hooks main library. They sell books, magazines and records that have been taken out of library circulation.
The selection is way bigger than I thought it would be. They’ve got several shelves of hardcover and paperback fiction (with most titles priced around $3). There are also plenty of children’s books, non-fiction books and reference books.
