For the last few weeks, I’ve been hearing about the Waffle Shop at Calvary Church downtown. It’s a lunch-only, Lent-only tradition.
I met my friend Andre there this afternoon for lunch. We were seated by a volunteer hostess and asked to mark what we wanted for lunch on the orange paper menus. The menu options are [...]
A few days ago, someone on Facebook asked me what the deal is with that little key shack on Poplar Ave. between Colonial and Mendenhall.
The place is called A-1 Keys, and it’s a tiny, tan building right next to the train tracks. The building has a bit of a temporary air to it, but it’s [...]
Memphis in May announced the line-up for this year’s Beale Street Music Festival today.
The Beale Street Music Festival kicks off Memphis in May and is the largest music event in Memphis every year. Last year, more than 40 percent of the attendees were from more than 200 miles away.
You can view the full BSMF lineup [...]
Day 57:
It’s OK. Go home.
In the R.P. Tracks ladies room
Memphis, Tenn.
Day 58:
The black thing is my dog, the blue things are my legs, and the stringed thing is my ukulele. I was sitting on the porch yesterday, desperately trying to pretend it was spring.
In other news:
- The first-ever I Love Memphis party is happening on [...]
Last week, Memphis Jones and the Backbeat Memphis posse crashed a Memphis Roller Derby practice at the Fairgrounds. We did our best to show him what roller derby is all about, but I think he might need some skates before he gets on the track again.

Also, Backbeat just launched [...]
I owe this post to the awesome Memphis Facebook fan who suggested that I check out Spruce in East Memphis. I totally appreciate reader tips, especially when they lead me to tiny, colorful, out-of-the-way places that sell amazing jewelry and interesting home decor items.
Spruce is sort of the ultimate in hidden gems. It’s located on [...]
The tiny station to the extreme left of the FM dial is the city’s only volunteer radio station. There is a paid staff of three, but the majority of the work it takes to keep the station on the air is done by a cadre of volunteer DJs, programmers and fund-raisers. WEVL’s eclectic music mix comes from the DJs, who program their own shows. Anyone can volunteer to host a show (now’s a good time – the station has several time slots to fill).
I picked up this canister of Ugly Mug’s Creme Brulee Hot Chocolate at Schnucks yesterday. I made the first cup this morning, and I think I may have a new favorite drink. It’s warm and vanilla-y and caramel-y, and totally made in Memphis. Yum.
According to loads of people (including reporters from the Flyer and the Commercial Appeal), Fuego Maya’s restaurant has the best salsa in Memphis. In this case, please believe the hype, because Fuego Maya’s salas is the best salsa I’ve ever eaten. Seriously – the best.
It’s incredibly fresh and chunky. It’s not a big red soupy [...]
One of the suggested items on the great Memphis Scavenger Hunt list was “old school Memphis State stuff”. There was no stipulation as to what kind of “stuff” it was to be. But thanks to my mom (a Memphis State graduate) and a family friend, I’ve found something that will do.
My mom’s friend Jim reached [...]
