We’re three quarters of the way to the Final Four of the Breakfast Brackets. Today, local pub Bardog Tavern is going up against Miss Polly’s, a Beale St. chicken shack. Bring it on!

For the last few weeks, I’ve been hearing about the Waffle Shop at Calvary Church downtown. It’s a lunch-only, Lent-only tradition.
I met my friend Andre there this afternoon for lunch. We were seated by a volunteer hostess and asked to mark what we wanted for lunch on the orange paper menus. The menu options are [...]
Here’s the 66th photo for Memphis Project 365. There’s a Luau Party, and it’s just ahead.
In other news:
- Readers Audrey and David are roadtripping to South By Southwest. Their trip is sponsored by Toyota, and in each city along the way, they’ve got missions to complete. They’ll be in Memphis tonight, and one of their [...]
I decided to try something totally new for lunch today, so I grabbed my husband (it’s his day off) and went to Interim in East Memphis.
I’ve never tried Interim before, mostly because it’s one of those places that seems like it would be a Really Nice Restaurant. Sometimes, it’s easier for me to try Really [...]
PaPa Pia’s is a casual Italian restaurant on Union Ave. downtown. I like them for lunch because they’ve got smaller, more manageable (and less expensive) portions of their entrees.
Ben Vaughn’s new restaurant Au Fond opened yesterday in Cooper Young (right next door to his other restaurant, Grace).
I’m not sure if you’ve figured it out yet, but baked goods are totally the way to my heart. I spend a lot of time trolling bakeries around town, sampling cookies and bread and pie.
Today, I stopped into Big Ono Bakery on Front St. The Hawaiian bakery is just a block from my office and [...]
The food at Alcenia’s is incredible – the green beans were perfectly seasoned, the macaroni was gloriously cheesy, and the catfish was very lightly breaded. The service was insanely affectionate – at one point, the owner, B.J. Chester-Tomayo, came over and gave me a big hug and a kiss on the head. Aww!
Apparently, the diner near the University of Memphis commonly known as the Chinese Sub Shop is actually called the Super Submarine Sandwich Shop. My mom (who used to eat there while she was a student at the U of M in the 1970s) calls it the Sub Wash Pub. No matter what you call it, the tiny, dimly lit diner is worth a visit.
They’ve got a full drink menu, and they’re running a special where if you buy a Cafe Eclectic travel mug for $4, all of your to-go coffee refills are $1, tax included.
The hours at Little Cafe Eclectic are different – Monday through Saturday, they’re open until 9 p.m., and Sunday, they’re open from 7 a.m. – 3 p.m. They’re located right across the street from Miss Cordelia’s.
