Hello!

My name is Kerry, and I love Memphis.

I was born in Memphis, moved away for college, and then moved back to Memphis to live and work. There are a lot of reasons to live here – the cost of living is low, the music is good, the food is amazing, and the people can’t be beat.

Memphis is a place unlike anywhere else, and I’m so lucky to live here.

Because I want you to love Memphis as much as I do, this site is intended to highlight the best of what’s going on in Memphis.

I’m only one person, though, so I need your help. If you’ve got something that you’d like to see featured in this space or information about events, please let me know.

If you’re a PR person / record label / book publisher / attraction / restaurant, etc., you’re welcome to send me stuff to review on the site. Please know that if it’s not from Memphis or related to Memphis, it’s probably not going to make it onto the blog. Before you send anything, read the disclosures page. If you’re still interested, email me.

    You rock.
I will be moving to Memphis shortly, from St. Louis, and I’m getting tired of all the Memphis self-hate. (We have it here, too!) We will be moving from one most beloved “Dangerous City” to another and I have found myself defending Memphis to Memphians! This is why I now love you. I knew there was a kickass city in there somewhere and just needed someone to point it out. You have made me very excited about our upcoming move. Keep it up!

I love your I Love Memphis blog! Great to find a place to read up on my old hometown, which I begrudgingly left this summer and very much look forward to visiting next month. And Go Tigers!

They’re also talking you up at the City-Date Memphis relocation forum.

Love your blog. Just started reading it recently. keep up the great work and good luck with the scavenger hunt. Sounds like fun.
Cakes – welcome to Memphis. I’m a transplant too. I’ve been here about 6 years and love it. There is self-hate in every city or town.

Okay, I need your help! Our soon-to-be 5 year old loves live music and we want to take him to Memphis in early Feb for a fun weekend; we need to know the best kid-friendly places to take him. Advice welcome!

I love Memphis, too! I have lived here almost my whole life. My brief stint in grad school at Ole Miss didn’t really count because I came back to Memphis all the time. Memphis is a wonderful place to BE. Thank you for spreading the word!

    You are adorable!
Thanks for inspiring all of us to love our city more. There is so much to love here, too! Here’s to you for reminding us of that in the aftermath of the unfortunate Forbes report. Keep up the good work-I look forward to reading you every day.

I saw you were going to Sekisui for dinner. It has long been one of our favorite places as my son is a true sushi afficianado. (How’s that for cross cultural?)I’m going to copy you an email exchange I’ve been having with them. Would you go back???
    Dear Mr. Ishii,

My family and I have enjoyed many dinners at Sekisuii on Belvedere. Last night my son and I stepped into the restaurant to dine a little after 6:30 and were lucky to get a table for two. We were quickly attended by the waiter and had drinks, miso soup and edamame before 6:45. We ordered our sushi when he brought the soup and edamame. Then the waiting began. The waiter returned to our table to say they were very backed up and to see if I wanted another beer about 7:15. I declined another beer, thinking the sushi would be coming soon. Eventually I did order another beer. When we still had no sushi at 7:50, we decided to go elsewhere. We had not seen the waiter in a long while so I walked up to the fellow seating guests and handed him some cash for what we had already had. I handed him $13, which may not have been enough, but we were hungry and did not want to wait any longer.

We left the restaurant and went home. My son realized as soon as we walked in the house, he had left his phone on the table. He drove back to the restaurant and looked for his phone where we had been sitting. People at the next table said someone from the restaurant had picked up the phone. He went back to the young man seating people and asked for his phone. The young man got a woman (did not give her name or position) to talk to my son while holding his phone. She said he had to pay for the sushi (only 3 of 5 rolls ordered were ready), which was now magically ready and in a to go box before he could have his phone. He luckily had a debit card to pay with the tab.The tab was about $34.00. The $13. I had given the young man was returned to my son and he tipped the waiter as a food service worker himself, he didn’t want to stiff the waiter. I would not have tipped.

Mr. Ishii, this is not good customer service. Your restaurant was my son’s favorite and what should have been a special night for us turned into a very unfortunate evening. If I had known the staff would hold his phone hostage, I would have returned to the restaurant with him and declined to pay for the food that could not be delivered in over an hour of waiting.

I hope you can address this situation and resolve it in a way that makes us want to return to your very fine restaurant.

    Thank you,

    Ms. Hutchison,

I sincerely apologize for the terrible experience you and your son received last night at our Sekisui Midtown location. I want to assure you this is not the service we expect from our staff. We are investigating the situation and will contact you with further information of what may have happen last evening. Again I graciously apologize and hope that we can convince you and your family to give Sekisui a second chance.

    Sincerely,

    Shyree

    Dear Shyree,
What’s become of your further investigations? I found the credit card receipt my son signed and he tipped the server an additional $8.00!

    Ms. Hutchison,

I sincerely apologize for such late response to your complaint but I was out of the office for a death in my family the week after your complaint.

I did speak with Ms. Lee the Manager at our Midtown location. She explained that she was the person who spoke with your son that night when he returned to get his celluar phone. She stated that she was holding the phone while they were talking but she was not confiscating it for payment and I apologize if that is the impression that was given. She was only having a conversation with your son about the situation at hand.

Lee explained to me that yes the restaurant was extremely busy that night and the sushi bar was slammed, the customers were ordering sushi and not kitchen items and the sushi orders were very backed up but they tried to comfort the customers as best they could with items from the kitchen. I apologize for the server disappearing act and I spoke with Lee about servers being available to the customers.

Lee stated that she explained to your son that the amount of money left was not enough to cover the items you did have while waiting and she informed him that the sushi was now ready if he wanted to purchase it. She did not insist that he purchase the sushi she only informed him that it was ready if he still wanted the sushi order. She did ask if he would pay the remaining balance of your bill and expressed that if he did not it would be charged to the server. Your son exclaimed that he did not want that to happen to the server and that he would pay the balance and purchase some of the sushi also, the $8.00 additional tip was the choice of your son not a demand from the manager. I am truly sorry for this misunderstanding and hope you and your family continue to be customers of Sekisui. If I can assist any further please let me know.

    Sincerely,

    Shyree
