The Beauty Shop Makes Me Feel Pretty
The Beauty Shop Makes Me Feel Pretty
One of the best parts of eating at Beauty Shop in Cooper Young is that you're eating in a building that used to be an actual beauty shop - Priscilla Presley used to have her beehive hairdos here. There are all kinds of cool salon details - the hair-washing sinks at the bar, the hairdryer chairs, the booths tucked into the old salon stations, the huge curved mirror that the daily specials are written on.
The other best part is the absolutely delicious food! The Beauty Shop has an eclectic menu, filled with interpretations of classic dishes influenced by international cuisine. And they serve a brunch, dinner, and an underrated lunch.
While the atmosphere and swanky vibe always draw me in, it's this creative food that has The Beauty Shop in Cooper Young on every best-of, bucket list, must-visit list in town, including my own personal list of Memphis restaurant favorites.
The themed decor doesn't take itself too seriously or get overbearing. Just about everything at Beauty Shop is pretty - including the food.
I had lunch there recently and got the daily ravioli special, which was a ricotta ravioli in a tomato cream sauce with spinach and green onions. It was just the right amount of food at a really great price. There are also daily grilled cheese, crepe and soup specials at lunch.
Beauty Shop's dinner menu is amazing, and it changes frequently to use fresh seasonal ingredients.
If the vegetable ratatouille ever makes another appearance on the menu, order it. Don't think, just order it. I've been sitting here for five minutes trying to think of how to describe it, and I can't really come up with anything other than that it's warm and creamy and perfectly seasoned and goes well with just about everything.
For dessert, try a slice of one of the old fashioned cakes (the red velvet and coconut cream are delicious).
Beauty Shop is one of several Memphis restaurants owned by Karen Blockman Carrier. Carrier is also the woman behind Beauty Shop's neighbor in Cooper Young, Bar DKDC, and Mollie Fontaine's lounge in Victorian Village.
While dinner at the Beauty Shop is perfect for a special date night, birthday dinner, or group night out, the lunch is underrated and affordable, with daily grilled cheese sandwich, crepe, sandwich, and other specials.
Sunday Brunch at the Beauty Shop is super popular and delicious - the menu goes beyond your basic Benedicts and chicken 'n' waffles for a more international approach. I recommend a reservation for sure.
