10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (October 2018)
Volunteer Odyssey and I Love Memphis make it super easy for you to help the city you love by publishing a monthly list of easy, fun ways to volunteer in Memphis.
Here are nine ideas for October 2018, plus a save-the-date idea for November.
1. Carpenter Art Garden’s Greenline Bike Ride: every Thursday from 3-5pm (Oct. 11, 18, and 25)
Join the kids of Carpenter Art Garden along the Greenline every Thursday afternoon this fall. Carpenter Art Garden’s mission is to work with the children of Binghampton to promote each one’s creative potential and self-worth through exposure to artistic, educational, and vocational programs.
2. Levitt Shell Memphis 2018 Fall Season: every Thursday- Sunday until October 21st at various times
Join the Levitt Shell in Overton Park as a volunteer in our 10th Fall season of free music in Memphis. There are multiple volunteer opportunities Thursday through Sunday each week. Help us make it happen by volunteering your time & talents. We will give you a volunteer t-shirt & badge which you will wear at events to identify you as a volunteer to the audience. Become part a part of the Levitt Shell Family and join us on a mission of community and music!
3. Lucy J’s Bakery: Serve with the Dorothy Day House: Friday, October 12th and Saturday, October 13th
Lucy J’s Bakery needs help in their shop serving customers this weekend. Lucy J’s bakery provides job training and employment with living wages for parents who are working to transition out of homelessness through the Dorothy Day House.
4. Wolf River Conservancy’s Greenway Grand Opening at Epping Way: October 14th from 1-4pm
As the Wolf River Conservancy completes its 26-mile Greenway Trail, we stop and celebrate each completed section along the way with a Grand Opening. Please join us in speaking about the Greenway Trail and recruiting others for the Ambassador Program at the Wolf River Conservancy tent. Please come out to help setup the Wolf River Conservancy tent and tabling materials, assist with pumpkin painting, speak about the Greenway to residents, and share about the Greenway Ambassador program.
5. Memphis Botanic Garden Harvest Festival: October 16th – October 31st from 9:30am-noon
Join Memphis Botanic Garden at their Harvest Festival. At the festival, attendees will make some traditional harvest crafts including cider making, pumpkin painting and corn husk flowers. Discovery stations teach fun facts about fruit and vegetables, honey making, and seed dispersal. Volunteers will assist staff in guiding groups of students and teachers through activities designed to educate!
6. Volunteer Odyssey’s Service Challenge: Saturday, October 20th from 9am-2:30pm
Are you up for the (Service) Challenge? Join Volunteer Odyssey on October 20th for a day of great fun and service. Service Challenge is a great way to engage with the city of Memphis, give back to your community, and meet new people. Let’s come together to make a difference! Service Challenge sites include Catholic Charities, Wolf River Conservancy, Memphis Tilth, MIFA, Memphis Botanic Garden, and more. Register for FREE, and you’ll receive a t-shirt, food and drink at the after-party, and a chance to win one of our awesome door prizes.
7. Shelby Farms Park’s Boos + Booze: October 20th from 5-10pm
Boos + Booze is a spooky tradition coming back to the park! Join Shelby Farms Park in this spooky camp out! Volunteers must be 21 or older to participate. Volunteers must be able to pass a criminal background check. Volunteers will be asked to assist with event set-up, assisting guests with tent set-up and other event activities!
8. VolunCheers benefitting Room in the Inn: Thursday, October 25th from 6-7:30pm
Join us for our monthly volunteer happy hour at Room in the Inn. This is a great opportunity to fit volunteering into your busy schedule as well as meet new people. We’ll have beer, snacks, and a great volunteer project.
9. Germantown Parks and Recreation’s Fall Fest Haunted Trail: October 27th from 5-9pm
Get in the fall spirit with Germantown Parks and Recreation at their Fall Fest Haunted Trail. Volunteers will assist with trail set up and trail scares! Volunteers will dress up and opperate “scare stations” for the Fall Fest Haunted Trail.
10. Community Legal Center’s STRUT 2018: Tuesday, November 6th through Thursday, November 15th
Join Community Legal Center for their last STRUT ever! Don’t miss your last chance to see the live fashion show by Laurelwood Shopping Center up close and personal! There will also be fabulous food, delicious drinks, a sensational silent auction, a wine pull where everyone is a winner, and many ways to give to the Community Legal Center. Volunteers are needed to help set up the event, assist during the event, and cleanup the event.
