9 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (September 2018)
Volunteer Odyssey and I Love Memphis make it super easy for you to help the city you love by publishing a monthly list of easy, fun ways to volunteer in Memphis.
Here are nine ideas for September 2018, plus a save-the-date idea for October.
1. Germantown Parks and Rec Small Fry Triathlon: Saturday, September 15th from 9am-11am
Small Fry Tri is an event for kids ages 2 to 6 where they “compete” in a triathlon style challenge course. Volunteers will assist with event set up and take down, as well as assist with monitoring the course and participants.
2. Playback Memphis’ Be the Peace Festival: Saturday, September 15th from 3pm-6pm
In celebration of Playback Memphis’ tenth anniversary and upcoming birthday, Playback is hosting the Be the Peace Festival in Frayser from 3 to 6 pm on Saturday, September 15 at the Ed Rice Community Center in Frayser, 2907 N. Watkins. All are welcome to attend this free event that will feature live music from the African Jazz Ensemble, community booths, food, refreshments and more.
3, Volunteer Odyssey’s VolunCheers benefitting American Cancer Society: Tuesday, September 18th from 6-7:30pm
Join us for our monthly volunteer happy hour at American Cancer Society. This is a great opportunity to fit volunteering into your busy schedule as well as meet new people. We’ll have beer, snacks, and a great volunteer project.
4. Shelby Farms Park Free Fitness Day: Thursday, September 20th from 2pm-7pm
This free fitness event will bring in people from all over Memphis to enjoy free fitness classes, food trucks and local fitness vendors. There will also be a surprise fitness guest who is nationally known! We are asking for volunteers to help with vendor move-in, parking and clean up.
5. Madonna Learning Center Backfield Bash: Thursday, September 27th through Saturday, September 29th at various times
Join Madonna Learning Center as we set up for our Backfield Bash. Activities include moving hay bales, setting up tables, setting up stage and dance floor. Volunteers are also needed to help with decoration and to help refill the food stations.
6. Young Professionals of American Cancer Society’s Putt Putt Pub Crawl: Saturday, September 29th from noon-5:30pm
The Young Professionals for the American Cancer Society are hosting their annual Putt-Putt Pub Crawl and we need your help! We need volunteers to help greet guests, man the registration table, and assist golfers with putters and golf balls.
7. Community Legal Center’s Jam for Justice: Saturday, September 29th from 5pm-11pm
Jam for Justice is a a fun event where great local bands give back to a good cause. Community Legal Center will need volunteers to help sell tee shirts and koozies, as well as work the crowd to generate donations. We will set up the event around 5pm. Bands will start playing at 6pm and end around 11pm. If you can only help for a certain time period please just let us know. All help is welcome!
8. Memphis Botanic Garden’s Memphis Japan Festival: Sunday, September 30th from 9:30am-5:30pm
Join Memphis Botanic Garden for a full day of music, dance, martial arts, a roving Japanese Candyman, and Taiko. Admission includes the Memphis Japan Festival and Memphis Botanic Garden, as well as tours of the Japanese Garden throughout the day. Volunteers will assist Japan Festival and Botanic Garden staff to help create an immersive environment!
And even though this isn’t until October, I want to get it on y’all’s radar! …
9. Volunteer Odyssey’s Service Challenge: Saturday, October 20th from 9am-2:30pm
Are you up for the (Service) Challenge? Join Volunteer Odyssey on October 20th for a day of great fun and service. Service Challenge is a great way to engage with the city of Memphis, give back to your community, and meet new people. Let’s come together to make a difference! Service Challenge sites include Catholic Charities, Wolf River Conservancy, Memphis Tilth, MIFA, Memphis Botanic Garden, and more. Register for an event, and you’ll receive a t-shirt, food and drink at the after-party, and a chance to win one of our awesome door prizes. Your ticket includes access to a service project of your choice and to the after-party held at Memphis Botanic Gardens.
