10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (August 2018)
Volunteer Odyssey and I Love Memphis make it super easy for you to help the city you love by publishing a monthly list of easy, fun ways to volunteer in Memphis.
Here are ten ideas for August 2018.
1. The Grizzlies Foundation New Mentor Training: Tuesday, August 7th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm
The Grizzlies Foundation Training Institute provides best-in-class training to mentors and mentor programs so that they are equipped to improve student outcomes. The mentor training starts the process to prepare mentors with the needed tools and skills to mentor and work with the youth within the Grizzlies Youth Mentoring Partnership network. Training is required and upon completion, volunteer mentors are then referred to a participating partner organization based on interests, location, age and gender.
2. ARISE2Read’s Fall Kick-Off and Training: Tuesday, August 7 from 9:30am to 12:00pm
Join the ARISE2Read team at Bellevue Baptist Church on August 7, 2018 from 9:30 am – 12 pm. Check-in begins at 8:30 in the West Lobby, then enjoy a light breakfast before the program begins promptly at 9:30 am in the Worship Center. SAVE A CHILD. SAVE A FAMILY. SAVE A CITY.
3. Memphis Botanic Garden’s Firefly Glow: Friday, August 10th, 2018 from 5:30pm to 9:30pm
Firefly Glow is a large end-of-summer party! It features many different parts- including the Illumination Station, the Glow Lab, and the Lightning Bug Light Show. Volunteers will assist staff in creating a fun environment for guests!
4. Dorothy Day House’s Chicken & Beer Fest: Saturday, August 11th with Multiple shifts available from 3:15pm to 8:30pm
Join us as a volunteer for the inaugural Memphis Chicken & Beer Festival. Volunteers are needed for different stations such as checking in station, gaming station, welcoming station, and much more.
5. Playback Memphis: Memphis Matters: Saturday, August 18th from 7:30pm to 9:00pm
Memphis Matters is Playback Memphis’s bi-monthly public performances held at Theatre South in Cooper Young, need your help. We need volunteers to help with ticketing, will call, etc. Easy and fun assignment, we promise!
6. The 2018 Monroe Avenue Festival: Sunday, August 19th from 6am-8pm
The 10th Annual Monroe Avenue Festival (and 9th Annual Breakaway Bardog 5K) return to Downtown Memphis on Sunday, August 19, 2018! We’re expecting 1500 runners and over 6000 festival attendees this year, held on Monroe Ave between Main & Front Streets. We will need volunteers for various times and positions, including race packet pickup, setup/breakdown, water stations along the route, etc. The packet pickups are from 7:30AM to 8:30AM, and the race starts at 9AM. The race afterparty (the largest in the city) immediately follows the race, and the festival opens to the public from noon-6PM.
7. Volunteer Odyssey’s VolunCheers benefitting Memphis Botanic Garden: Tuesday, August 21st from 6-7:30pm
This month’s Voluncheers benefits Memphis Botanic Gardens. Have a beer and volunteer to help make a difference with this great organization!
8. Refuge Memphis’ Shower of Blessings: Tuesday, August 21st from 5:30-8pm
This program sends out vans to pick up homeless individuals to come get fresh clothing, toiletries, take a hot shower, and are provided with a hot meal, plus dessert, along with a to go meal and a bag of items to hold them over until next pick up. There is an inspiration message of hope, on site counseling, job assist professionals, and other program workers on hand to provide opportunities to those who are ready to make a life change.
9. Trail Blazing Saturdays at Lichterman Nature Center: Sunday, August 26th from 8:30am to 12:00pm
Enjoy the natural wonders of Lichterman Nature Center’s lake, forest & meadow habitats and help keep the trails accessible at the same time! Help remove weeds, non-native privet plants and debris from trails that wind through a wooded wonderland. Bring a picnic and enjoy Lichterman after you volunteer.
10. Urban Bicycle Food Ministry’s Wednesday Night Burrito Ride: Wednesday, August 29th from 7:30pm to 9:00pm
Join us for our Wednesday night ride. We’ll meet up at the Carpenter’s House and split into groups. You’ll be assigned to a group with an experienced team lead and each group will take a section of midtown or downtown. We distribute necessities like water and food (especially burritos). We also give out supplies based on the season: gloves and blankets in the winter, extra water and bug spray in the summer.
