Tuesday News Update: Memphians Go Viral, Festival News, And A Big Thank You
Happy Tuesday, Memphis! I have an illuminating news update for you today, including suggestions for things to do this weekend, fun Memphis news stories you might have missed, and the MEMPHO Festival lineup for 2018.
A couple of events this weekend.
1. The inaugural Memphis Literary Arts Festival is happening all day on Saturday in the Edge District and features 30 authors and artists from Memphis and the world. Some big names are coming, and my inner writer nerd is completely psyched. I’m also shocked that it’s free. They’ll have talks and panels, a street fair, and after party on Saturday. The hosting entity, Center for Southern Literary Arts, is a Memphis organization and you should check them out. MLAF will also host the ticketed Hibiscus Salon on Friday night.
2. You know about the Levitt Shell’s free shows, and the intimate music experiences you can have at local concert series like Sofar Sounds and Folk All Y’all. But have you heard of the Harbert Avenue Porch Show series? It’s been going on for a few years and sounds like the perfect thing for a chill music lover. Relax in Central Gardens to the sweet sounds of Jack Oblivian Band this Saturday, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. It’s free, but you should donate to the band.
3. This is your chance to give back to Memphis this weekend: New Memphis will host a “Spruce Up” cleanup day at a few local schools. It’s on Saturday morning, and they could use a few more signups. It’s free to participate, just your time and a little elbow grease. Sign up here.
A few events coming up later in June.
There’s an electronic music festival happening at Crosstown Arts all weekend long on June 22-24. It’s the second annual Memphis Concrète Festival and you can catch Jack The Giant Killer, IMAKEMADBEATS, and dozens of other experimental sound artists there. Read more here.
If you haven’t been to a Spillit storytelling event, what are you waiting for? One of the coolest, most unique things to do in Memphis, there’s another Spillit Slam at Amurica Photo Booth on Friday, June 29. It’s just $10, which includes beer (tip your bartender!) and gives you a chance to stand up in front of strangers and tell a five-minute story. Or just watch. The theme is “In Tune” and you can get more details on how it works here.
Meddlesome Brewing’s first birthday is going to be a good one. They’re hosting the Meddlesome Meandering .5K. You read that right. The “race” is only a half-mile long and includes hydration and food stops, a costume contest, and two beers per world-class athlete. It’s just $25 and they’re giving 100 percent of that to the Alzheimer’s Association. The good news is, two weeks is plenty of time to train; so sign up today (details). Stick around for the Born Day Party with music, food trucks, rare beer and cask tappings, and more.
Local news and updates.
Door Dash, a food delivery app, launches in Memphis on June 27. I asked them for a discount code for I Love Memphis readers, and I’ll be sure to let you know if they oblige. UPDATE: They’re offering $5 off your first DoorDash order of $15 or more, valid on or after June 27.
The NickiHndrxx Tour is coming to Memphis. The Nicki Minaj and Future show will be at FedExForum on October 23, 2018. Tickets go on sale on June 15.
Long Road Cider will open a cidery in Cooper Young; it will be the first cidery in Memphis.
Wing Guru – which you can read more about here – will open a new location in Bartlett on June 22 at 7199 Stage Road.
MEMPHO Music Festival announced their 2018 lineup, and it seems like everyone is very excited about it. The two-day festival is on October 6 and 7 at Shelby Farms and the headliners are Beck, Post Malone, Nas, Phoenix, Janelle Monae, and a bunch of local artists. See the whole lineup and get your tickets here.
For all you fitness fans – and I know you exist in multitudes, because I see you flexing on Instagram – there’s a new way to get the best of classes and gyms in Memphis. Diversifit is a locally-owned app that lets you pay a monthly fee for access to group fitness gyms in East Memphis and Germantown including Iron Tribe, Hot Yoga Plus, Shed Fitness, Crossfit Chickasaw, Will Coleman’s Boot Camp, CycleBar, and more. This seems like a sweet deal for someone who wants to stay in shape, but needs some variety. Find out more here.
Draft Watch Party!
Next week’s NBA Draft is a huge freaking deal for the Grizzlies, so everyone is understandably excited (or agitated) about it. You don’t have to celebrate (or fret) alone, though. The Grizzlies will host an official Watch Party in FedExForum on June 21 at 5:30 p.m., and I’ll be there with my pals from Grizzly Bear Blues with giveaways and more.
After the moment of truth (draft pick) and a few festivities at FedExForum, follow us to Rec Room where we’re having a gratuitous Draft-Watch-Party-After-Party from 8 p.m. ‘til they close at 11 p.m. We’ll have free Muddy’s for the first 100 folks, lots of giveaways, the end of the Draft/sports commentary on the big screen, and $1 off all beers. I can’t wait to see you there!
A Big Thank You
It’s been a few weeks, but I’m still riding high from our awesome Memphis in May 901 Fest blog meetup. Thanks to some local sponsors, we got to hang out on the banks of the Mississippi River with drinks, snacks, games, and the mobile mural. I also got to meet some of you, which was the best part.
We literally could not have done it without the help of aforementioned donations. Thank you to Memphis Made Brewing, Old Dominick Distillery, Nikki’s Hot Ass Chips, Prima Bakery & Boutique, Milk Dessert Bar, Memphis International Raceway, Loflin Yard, Majestic Grill, Teddy Bear Express, Hick’s, and Memphis in May. Y’all check them out! Thank you also to my colleagues Leah and Alex, and to volunteers Brendan, Kayleigh, Parks, Don, William, Sarah, Joan, and others who made the day a great success.
Memphis going viral for good things.
In case you missed it, this adorable double proposal at the Memphis Zoo captivated pretty much the whole Internet.
Then, Memphian Lashara Wheeler saved some baby ducks, went viral, and got to be the Peabody Duckmaster for a day.
Yesterday we honored Lashara Wheeler, who saved eight ducklings from a downtown drain, with the title of Honorary Duckmaster! Read about it here: https://t.co/RBB9KWLiOE
