10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (November 2017)
Volunteer Odyssey and I Love Memphis make it super easy for you to help the city you love by publishing a monthly list of easy, fun ways to give back. Here are eleven ideas for November 2017, including some for this weekend.
1. Big Brother Big Sisters Orientation: Saturday, November 4th from 10:00am – 11:00am
Ever wanted to volunteer to be a Big Brother or Big Sister? Now is your chance! Sign up for their upcoming volunteer orientation now so that you can learn more about their organization, your role as a volunteer, and the support structure that they have in place to benefit you and your Little.
2. Shelby Farms Greenline 1/2 Marathon and 5K: November 11th from 6am-1pm
Sign up to help Shelby Farms conduct the Greenline Half Marathon and 5K! Volunteers will be needed to help with course monitoring, manning water stations, picking up trash, aiding with parking, award ceremony tasks, and more! All the proceeds for this event will benefit the 10.65 urban Greeline trail.
3. Volunteer Odyssey’s Pop Up Volunteer Party: November 17th from 11:00am – 1:00pm
Stop by the Volunteer Odyssey office on South Main to give back during your lunch break and get some free pizza from Aldo’s! They will be featuring volunteer opportunities that can take as little as 60 seconds of your time, which only goes to show that even a minute can make a difference! There will be projects benefitting MIFA, Memphis Botanic Garden, Memphis Public Library, and more!
4. Shelby Farms Starry Nights: Friday, November 24th through Thursday, December 28th
Volunteers are needed to help with Shelby Farms’ Starry Nights celebrations. Starry Nights is the largest holiday light show in the Mid-South and is the longest running celebration at Shelby Farms Park. Sign up to be a part of this annual tradition and you will have access to all the hot chocolate that your heart desires!
5. Memphis Botanic Garden’s Snowy Nights: Tuesday, November 21st through Saturday, December 30th
Come and enjoy the beauty of the snowy winter weather, even if Mother Nature did not supply it! Snowy Nights in My Big Backyard is an opportunity for families to engage in all sorts of winter fun, such as sipping hot chocolate, roasting marshmallows, and playing in “faux snow”! Volunteers are needed to help create this fun and festive holiday environment.
6. Evening Hospitality at Carpenter’s House: Wednesday, November 1st through Wednesday, December 20th from 4:00 to 6:00pm
Volunteers will be needed to help set up before the event by making coffee and making sure the space is clean and ready for the guests to arrive. Volunteers will also be greeting guests as they arrive and offering pleasant conversation. Room in the Inn also welcomes volunteers to share music, art, and other skills and talents you may posses with the guests.
7. Clean Memphis Cordova Cleanup: Saturday, November 4th from 9:00am – 11:00am
Support Clean Memphis’ vision to keep Memphis clean and promote pride in our community by helping them spruce up the Cordova area. They need your help!
8. Volunteer Odyssey’s VolunCheers benefitting Room in the Inn: Tuesday, November 14th from 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Be sure to sign up for Volunteer Odyssey’s monthly volunteer happy hour. Join the Volunteer Odyssey team and other local Memphians for some beer, snacks, and a chance to give back! Spots fill up quickly, so make sure to sign up today!
9. Grizzlies Foundation New Mentor Training: Saturday, November 18th from 9:00am – 12:00pm
The Grizzlies Mentor Program seeks to pair adults in the community with children and adolescents in order to improve student outcomes. Before you can become a mentor, though, you must complete their training program. Sign up today to begin the process of becoming a role model and leader to youth in the Memphis community!
10. The College Initiative Networking Night: Thursday, November 16th from 5:30-7:30pm
Share your profession with The College Initiative’s aspiring high school scholars over a networking dinner. Impart your wisdom with 9th – 12th graders and meet other Memphis professionals, all while enjoying a free meal.
