10 Ways To Give Back To Memphis This Month (December 2017)
Volunteer Odyssey and I Love Memphis make it super easy for you to help the city you love by publishing a monthly list of easy, fun ways to give back. Here are ten ideas for December 2017, including some for this weekend.
1. St. Jude Kids Race and Afterparty: Saturday, December 2nd from 12:00pm – 4:00pm
Come out and assist the YMCA in celebrating children’s completion of the St. Jude Marathon! The children will run 25.2 miles in the weeks leading up to the day of the big race. Then they will complete their final mile of the marathon, which will end at the official St. Jude Memphis Marathon finish line! Volunteers will be needed to help with the post-race celebration, which will feature games, food, and fun!
2. Memphis Botanic Garden’s Holiday Wonders/Snowy Nights: Tuesday, November 21st through Saturday, December 30th
Come and enjoy the beauty of the snowy winter weather, even if Mother Nature did not supply it! Snowy Nights in My Big Backyard is an opportunity for families to engage in all sorts of winter fun, such as sipping hot chocolate, roasting marshmallows, and playing in “faux snow”! Volunteers are needed to help create this fun and festive holiday environment.
3. Shelby Farms Starry Nights: Friday, November 24th through Thursday, December 28th
Volunteers are needed to help with Shelby Farms’ Starry Nights celebrations. Starry Nights is the largest holiday light show in the Mid-South and is the longest running celebration at Shelby Farms Park. Sign up to be a part of this annual tradition and you will have access to all the hot chocolate that your heart desires!
4. Arise2Read Training: Tuesday, December 5th from 10:00am – 11:30am
Help improve children’s’ literacy skills by signing up for Arise2Read training! They will prepare you to tutor second graders and teach them a set of words called ‘Fry words’ by using flash cards and fun word games.
5. Volunteer Odyssey Pop Up Volunteer Party: Friday, December 8th from 11:00am – 1:00pm
Stop by the Volunteer Odyssey office during your lunch break to help out with some quick, exciting volunteer opportunities that can take as little as 60-seconds! Perks include I Love Memphis swag and a free slice of Aldo’s Pizza!
6. Volunteer Odyssey’s Voluncheers: Monday, December 4th from 6:00pm – 7:30pm
Join Volunteer Odyssey for their monthly volunteer happy hour! This month’s Voluncheers will be benefitting Carpenter Art Garden. Sign up to socialize, sip, and snack while completing important tasks for our local non-profits!
7. Y-CAP Gift Wrapping Event: Tuesday, December 12th from 5:00pm – 7:00pm
Are you an expert gift wrapper? We have the perfect opportunity for you! The YMCA is looking for volunteers to help put together holiday food baskets and wrap Christmas presents for kids and families of Y-CAP. The YMCA Community Action Program (Y-CAP) is an early intervention program that works with youth and their families to improve behavior and academic performance in their homes, schools, and communities.
8. Team Max – Soulfull Memphis Operation Christmas Basket Volunteers: Saturday, December 16th from 6:30am – 11:00am
Help share the joy of the holiday season with thousands of seniors and needy families through the gift of a holiday food basket. Volunteers will be assembling large boxes of canned, packaged, and fresh food along a conveyor belt. Nearly 30 items will go into each basket, so they’re going to need many helping hands!
9. Room In the Inn at The Cathedral: Sunday, December 24th through Monday, December 25th
Join Room In the Inn and Inn Crowd at the Cathedral as they provide some #HolyHospitality on Christmas. They will be providing homeless individuals with a family style dinner, personal hygiene products, and bus passes. Donate your time or your supplies to the ministry in order to help those who are less fortunate have a happy holiday.
10. Shelby Farms’ Starry 4k Fun Run and Walk: Saturday, December 30th
Visitors will have the unique opportunity to see Starry Nights at the speed of light as they run or walk through the light show! Volunteers will be needed to help with registration, hot coca stations, and course monitoring.
