What do you think of this year’s lineup?

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.

What happened to the Blues Festival?? Its all rap. I thought you had a variety of venues but I won’t come back if its all rap crap.

    • Holly Whitfield says:

Hi Kathy! Are you getting the Beale Street fest confused with another event? The Beale Street Music Festival has had a variety of genres represented in its 60+ artists every year since I’ve been paying attention since about 2006. I’m seeing only about 5 rap artists listed, though I may have missed 1 or 2: Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wyte (a Memphis native), and Machine Gun Kelly.

The majority of these are rock and pop groups with some singer-songwriters sprinkled in. There are more than 15 blues artists listed…Toronzo Cannon, Ghost Town Blues Band, Tas Cru, Brad Webb (though he does rock, too), Zeke Johnson, Big Head Blues Club, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Corey Harris to name a few. They have 3 big stages plus 1 smaller tent/stage that BSMF sets up as dedicated to blues only.

If you are looking for a blues-only festival, try the Bona Fide Blues Fest held in the fall (October-ish) every year, typically in Overton Square, as well as next year’s International Blues Challenge on Beale Street (usually in late Jan/early Feb.) or head over to our friends in Arkansas for the King Biscuit Blues Fest in Helena in October.

It’s kind of amazing how much music the Mid-South has to offer, isn’t it?

Thanks for your interesting take on the Memphis music scene. We are contemplating a trip there this spring. Could you put me on your mailing list?

  3. Jessica Clark says:

ISO 2 Sunday passes to Beal Street!
