A New Place For Memphis Music: The Bluff on Highland

The Bluff, a new Memphis music venue located in the former Newby's theater, opened to the public on Monday January 9. Goodbye dark, decrepit venues with strange bathrooms. Hello, shiny new bar on the Highland Strip.

The Bluff is a totally renovated space with three bars, two patios, 30 TVs, a big stage with a dance floor, and a balcony. The pictures in this post are from a media preview day.

The new music venue and sports bar is owned by the same folks who own Rafters in Oxford, Mississippi. They plan to serve lunch and dinner with a focus on New Orleans style food, i.e., poboys. You can bet brunch is in the works, too.

I'm hearing that most of the shows will be 21+, and the musical focus will lean towards rock and country but not necessarily limited to that.

I'll update this post ASAP with more info on the venue, photos, and info about the live music. This particular space has been sitting there rotting for a while, so I'm glad to see it come back to life.

The Bluff currently opens at 5 p.m. daily, with lunch service beginning soon.

They have a cool skinny side patio with these garage doors that will create an indoor/outdoor space. When it's not, you know, freezing.

Is there a particular reason that a venue located in a University district will have mostly 21+ shows? Is it a smoking venue or something?

It's not a smoking venue, and it's not clear why exactly this decision was made. I asked them for details on their age policy, and also mentioned their proximity to 2 universities and they said, "We will be 21 and up on live music after 9:30 or 10 pm. Any live music during the days on Saturday or Sunday will be open to all age groups. We provide a family friendly atmosphere 7 days a week until around 9:30 pm at which time we will go to 21 and up." Still not sure why exactly.
