You’re Invited! Cheering Section For The 2016 St. Jude Marathon

The St. Jude Memphis Marathon is this Saturday, December 3. I Love Memphis is sponsoring a Cheering Section again – and you’re invited!
Mark your calendars for this Saturday at 10:15 a.m. and get ready to support the St. Jude Heroes running in the 2016 Marathon. Details below.
We’ll be stationed at Mile 22, which is where Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive turns into Linden off of Peabody (if you’re coming from The East). Here’s a map, with our area highlighted in yellow. The blue line is where the half marathon will split off.

We are back towards the end of the race, which means that the majority of marathon runners will come through from about 10:25 a.m. until 2:10 p.m. Yes, that’s a long interval.
We were at this mile mark two years ago. I can’t tell you how important it was for there to be folks cheering at this Mile. There was some crying and a lot of weird-laughing and a lot less people in tutus and costumes than there were at Mile 6 in 2015. I also think it’s also going to be easier to drive to this location than last year’s location.
Other things to know:
- We’ll have some donuts and water and maybe some other snacks while they last, but come prepared.
- We’ll have some signs to hold, but feel free to bring your own.
- Wear something warm and bring a poncho – we can do this!
- There should be plenty of street parking nearby. I’ll be Tweeting (follow me here) that morning with any other tips I have.
Also: please RSVP to the Facebook event so we get an idea of how many folks plan to be out on race day.
Not convinced to come out on a crisp (possibly slightly damp) December morning? I get it, it’s hard. But Mile 22 is a tough one and our cheers and presence are needed. Don’t believe me? Hear it from the runners who I told about this year’s section:
“Thank you so much! You don’t know how much we really appreciate support at [Mile 22].” – Keisha W., St. Jude Hero
“This is seriously a critical point for so many people and a great spot to do a spirit station. Thank you so much for organizing this!” – Miriam S., St. Jude Hero
“I remember sitting down on the curb and CRYING at mile 22 in the Chicago 2012 marathon!!! It would be so awesome to have extra support there!!” – Lexie J.
“This is EVERYTHING!! And such a lonely spot; so glad there will be people there!!!” – Rachel K.
“Thank you for being there to support the runners! I have a feeling I’m gonna need all the support I can get by mile 22.” – Bianca P.
If that doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will. See y’all Saturday.

Saturday, December 3, 2016
10:15 a.m. – 2:10 p.m.
Mile 22 (MLK at Linden and Somerville)
One more thing: if this person can run 26.2 miles in a Chewbacca costume, you can get up early and cheer for an hour this Saturday morning. Come for an hour, stay all day, whatever you can do.
This website needs updating. Please update free things to do in Memphis portion. And everything else. Thank you.
Hi Shana,
In addition to the 3 -7 new posts each week, I am constantly updating older posts or creating new versions of old posts. It’s likely that if you find something from the past, there is an updated version that will pop up easily during a search bar search. As for this one, St. Jude has not provided us with our assigned information for 2017 since it’s still 6 months away.
If you need something specific, just ask me. As for the free things to do in particular – click here. If you have trouble finding the new and updated posts, just go to the homepage – ilovememphisblog.com and scroll just a tiny bit past the “more Memphis to love” text. Under there you will find all of the posts in the order they were published from most recent to least recent. If you still have trouble, here are 25 of the most updated guides and posts of general interest as of today, June 26, 2017.
