Thursday News Update: Light Up The Bridges Edition

Today in Memphis, there's Greenline expansion, a way to give blood, chances for more fried chicken, and some seriously talented singers.

All of that (and more) is in your Thursday news update:

Ready to ride the new section of Shelby Farms Greenline? We'll be cutting the ribbon at 10am! #choose901 #ilovememphis

- As of today, Memphis has four more miles of the Shelby Farms Greenline. After the ribbon cutting at 10 a.m., this paved, protected bike/walk trail will extend an additional 4.15 miles eastward from the trailhead at Mullins Station and Farm Road.

- The June I Love Memphis Podcast will be released tomorrow! Horray! Our guest is Dr. Sarah Petschonek, the founder of Volunteer Odyssey. She talks to us about Memphis and tells me and Kevin exactly where we should volunteer based on our interests. Kevin and I also discuss Servicemaster’s move downtown, and my Ghost River kayak trip. Subscribe on iTunes today or come back to ilovememphispodcast.com tomorrow to stream online.

- South Main’s hangout spot, Loflin Yard (above) is resodding their front yard this weekend, so you’ll get a chance to hang out the Backyard instead on Saturday. The new space will be behind the Coach House and they’ll have live music, cornhole and ring game tourneys, Loflin shirts for sale, and you can get $1 off drinks at the Coach House bar when the train goes by.

- In honor of the victims of the Orland shooting, First Tennessee Bank will host a public blood drive on Monday June 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Look for the LIfeblood bloodmobile at Poplar and Mendenhall in East Memphis. The donations will help the Memphis community. More details here.

- FedEx has turned one of their planes into flying hospital and donated it to Orbis, a company that offers free quality eye care around the world. Way to go, FedEx. Check out the video above.

- A local family is launching a 30-day IndieGoGo campaign tomorrow, June 17 to build... wait for it...a Mrs. Winner’s Chicken & Biscuits in Memphis. Y’all know I don’t normally share crowdfunding stuff (because I wouldn’t have time for anything else) but: chicken and biscuits. Get details here and start donating tomorrow.

- Afraid your kids will forget everything they’ve learned over the summer? Memphis Challenge is a new Summer Online Learning Experience (SOLE) to boost math skills for students in grades 3-12. The 8-week program is $65. Get more info here.

- What to shop local? You're in luck. At City Hall on June 21, a group of Memphis makers and artisans will have a Maker Fair. Check out the full lineup of vendors here.

- Let there be light! Some financially gifted person(s) donated $12 million so we could get some festive lighting on our bridges. The Harahan Bridge will be ready to go full Lite Brite by the time it opens to the public on October 22, and the Hernando de Soto Bridge will get its new lights some time after that.

- Speaking of lighting things up, I posted the Mid-South Guide to the 4th of July this week.

- On Tuesday, Memphis a cappella group One Voice made it through to the 2nd round of America's Got Talent. Shout out to @901music for keeping us in the know.

That’s about it for today. If you have Memphis news, email me at [email protected].
If you have Memphis events, submit them to the calendar. Enjoy the rest of your week!
