365 Things to Do in Memphis #150: The FedEx St. Jude Classic
Grab your “Hush Y’all” sign – assignment #150 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to go to the FedEx St. Jude Classic (and while you’re there, eat a Pronto Pup.)
Some of the best players in golf come to Southwind every year for the week-long tournament, which is the longest-running event on the PGA Tour. The 2016 tournament starts today (June 6) and goes through Sunday, June 12.
In 2016, we have a great lineup: Phil Mickelson, Brook Koepka, Dustin Johnson, David Toms, Read more on the PGA Tour website.
The Classic starts with a Pro-Am tournaments on Monday and Wednesday that allow average Memphians to team up with professional golfers and celebrities (for a price). The PGA tournament game starts on Thursday and runs through Sunday afternoon.
There are a couple of fun traditions that go along with the FedEx St. Jude Classic every year. The aforementioned Pronto Pups are required eating at least once during the tourney. Sunday is “Seersucker Sunday”, so dress in your Southern southern finest (example above).
In true Memphis fashion, the FedEx St. Jude Classic has something that no other stop on the PGA tour can claim: volunteers stationed at every hole, waving purple signs that read “Hush, y’all.” Also this year, Memphis band Star & Micey will perform after tournament play on Saturday night.
Most importantly, though, the FedEx St. Jude Classic is a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The tournament has generated more than $25 million dollars for the hospital since 1970.
Reminders of the cause are constant at Southwind. People who live along the course hang “We (heart) St. Jude!” banners from their balconies. On Tuesday night, St. Jude hosts a (now sold-out) concert and event at the Cannon Center, “John Rich & Friends” to benefit the research hospital.
Overall, the FedEx St. Jude classic is a low key good time. I recommend finding a shady spot (there are some shaded bleachers) and watching the pros play. Southwind is a friendly place, and the players have been known to joke with fans and sign autographs (especially during the Pro-Am). If you want to see the whole schedule, go here. If you have more questions, go here.
1. Sunscreen and waters are a must. No really. It is hot.
2. Sit at the 18th hole – that way, you can see everyone playing finish their game rather. Plus, there’s plenty of shady seating.
3. Leave your phone on silent or turn it off to be sure. Don’t be that guy.
4. Get a Pronto Pup from the fanciest Pronto Pup dispensary ever.
