A Tale Of Two Donut Shops: Memphis Tuesday News Update

A Tale Of Two Donut Shops: Memphis Tuesday News Update

Today in Memphis, we have some donut news, a couple of new Memphis websites, a heads-up that Friday is Bike To Work Day, and lots of national media attention to brag about. Check it out.

- I still have just a few pairs of tickets left to give away for 901Fest, go here for contest details. If you like giveaways, stay tuned this week on this blog - I have a few more up my sleeve.

- The I Love Memphis Podcast is back after a little break. Check out the bonus clip about Memphis picnic basket ideas and the May edition, where Kevin and I learn seriously everything there is to know about the Levitt Shell.

- Memphis In May's World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest was another heated, delicious, smoky competition - and it only rained for a few minutes one day before competitors enjoyed lovely sunny weather the rest of the weekend. Check out the results here. That mouth-watering barbecue sandwich photo at the top of this post was from the Born in the QSA team. A+ stuff.

- There's a new donut shop on Main Street downtown called The Donut Factory. It seems like they're still getting things started, but are open periodically. I talked with the owner last week and he said they hope to be open 24 hours a day at some point, and serve breakfast and lunch as well. They have primarily cake donuts right now, but do have some yeast ones. I'll let you know if I get a chance to try it.

- In more donut news, the former Chiwawa location is going to be a donut shop. What do y'all think about this, yay or nay?

Update: Here's a quote from someone involved in the new donut shop: "There will be coffee and beer taps without question. We operate Tamp & Tap currently and if there’s demand for that sort of fare we will implement and cater to the soup/salad/sandwich desire if it makes sense." (check the comments section for more info)

- Maciel's on Main Street just opened their upstairs, which has pastries and cakes. And now they sell beer also. I already go there twice a week at least (it's unabashedly one of my favorite spots in town) so you can bet I'll be back with a full report soon.

-  In case you missed in the latest picnic basket post, High Cotton now has their beer for sale in cans at Cash Saver.

- This Friday is Bike To Work Day in Memphis! Also, Bike Walk Memphis and Explore Bike Share will host a mixer at Loflin Yard Thursday from 5-7 p.m. to “get pumped” about Bike to Work Day and reveal the latest bike share prototype bike.

- Every wonder what's up with the Riverboats and Beale Street Landing? Check out this Commercial Appeal article.

- National Burger Day is May 28 and to celebrate, Huey's will randomly give away free burgers all day at all eight of their locations. Read up on the details here, and prepare yourself for this holiday by checking out this list of delicious Memphis burger blog posts.

- Like murder mysteries? Want to solve one for yourself? You can now do this at Broad Escape Rooms' Murder Mystery Dinners. For $50 per person (each game requires 8 people) they'll set up a mystery for you and your friends - all you do is show up in character - and you also get a meal catered by Hog Wild. Right now, they have two games: One that’s 1920s themed and one that is 80s themed. Book your dinner here.

- I Love Memphis is now on Snapchat. Follow along for video snippets and fun photos of things worth loving in Memphis. The username is ilovememblog and the snap code is below.

- Check out this Travel + Leisure article that asks if Memphis is the next hot Southern city. Spoiler alert: we've been hot, it's just that the rest of the world is just now figuring it out.

- Money magazine put up another video about Memphis, featuring yours truly blabbering on about this place that I love, plus a lot of great footage of the city.

- Hilton's "Mom Voyage" travel blog posted this about fun things to do with kids in Memphis.

- Chicago is about to get a taste of Memphis! This is seriously cool: the Tennessee tourism folks are going to set up two 360-degree screens in two yet-to-be-revealed high traffic locations in Chicago, and then they're going to broadcast three live concerts from Tennessee locations. The first performance will be Citizen Cope on May 23, broadcast live from the Stax Museum. While these performances are closed to the public, I'll be there posting video and photos from the I Love Memphis Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat accounts.

- New website alert number 1: MemphisIsFunny.com, the new hub for all things comedy in Memphis. I have a lot of local shows on the calendar, but you can follow MemphisIsFunny's website, Facebook, and Twitter for more comprehensive coverage.

- New(ish) website alert number 2: Memphis Moms Blog launched back in November and it seems to be a mix of parenting advice and info on local family-friendly events written by a group of Memphis moms. You can follow them on their website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
- Signup is open for teams who want to compete in this year's Best Memphis Burger Fest, which is on August 28, 2016. Go here for Best Memphis Burger Fest details.

So sad about the donut shop!! If they have coffee and booze there may be hope for it. That patio was just great to hang out on and a donut shop won't really utilize this. I really think a reasturant or bar would have flowed better with Overton Square.

NIKI - - I think you might be surprised not only of the conservation of the patio but its new facelift. There will be coffee and beer taps without question. We operate Tamp & Tap currently and if there's demand for that sort of fare we will implement and cater to the soup/salad/sandwich desire if it makes sense. Our feeling is that there are already many restaurants and bars in the Square and lots of great places to eat dinner and have drinks. We're attempting to inject a little diversity into the block.

Got donuts from the donut factory on Main Street and was extremely disgusted at the end result. Bugs were flying all around inside the display case. Opened up one of the purchased donuts and there were live bugs inside . Absolutely revolting . How can you be a brand new donut shop and already have these types of problems ? It will be ridiculous if they stay open longer than a few months

Rachel - what a bummer. I'd heard some bad things myself and that's why I'd waited to try it out. Hopefully they'll get it together.
