9 Ways To Love Memphis This Month

May is here, and once again I’ve teamed up with Volunteer Odyssey to bring you unique ways to give back to our city again this month. Here are nine fun ways to show your love for Memphis.

1. Red Cross DAT Video on Volio: ongoing
Volunteer Odyssey is proud to introduce the Red Cross Disaster Action Team to Volio, our virtual volunteer fair.  The Red Cross’ Disaster Action Team mission is to provide food, shelter, and clothing to those in the community affected by natural and man-made disasters.  Volunteers are needed to work in the local community on a daily basis to assist families whose lives have been destroyed.

2. International Children’s Heart Foundation Office Volunteer: Every Thursday from 10am-1pm.

Volunteer your time to help the ICHF reach children in developing countries who are waiting to receive open heart surgery from the ICHF’s volunteer medical team.  Assistance is needed to help with various office tasks, including data entry, filing, transferring files from online storage to a local server, packing medical supplies, and much more.  Volunteer dates and times are flexible, so this is a great opportunity for busy professionals looking to get involved in their community.

3. Shelby Farms Park Conservancy Dog-a-Roo Festival: Saturday, May 7th from 10am-2pm.  

Lend your paw to help make Dog-A-Roo a success.  This festival at the Outback Off-Leash Dog Park has many activities for your furry four-legged friend, and volunteers are needed to help facilitate these activities which include and talent and costume contest, rescue parades, the Four-Legged 4K Fun Run, gourmet pet treats, and pet specialist information sessions.  Don’t miss the opportunity to spend the afternoon with the best pups of Memphis!

4. Carpenter Art Garden’s Ride the Greenline: Every Monday from 3:15-4:30pm.

If you love the great outdoors and children, then this is the volunteer opportunity for you! Volunteers meet at the Tillman Entrance of the Greenline and bike with the children of Binghampton.  This is a great opportunity if you are invested in promoting the creative potential and self-worth of children in your community.  Volunteers are asked to bring their own bicycle and helmet.

5. American Cancer Society Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer Happy Hour (Thursday, May 26th from 5-7:30pm), Memphis Golf Classic Committee Meeting (Monday, May 2nd from noon-1pm; May 10th from 8-9am; May 19th from 5:30-6:30pm), Harrah’s Hope Lodge Van Driver (Weekdays from 9am-4pm)

Help to fight cancer in the Memphis area.  The American Cancer Society has multiple opportunities for community members to get involved which include mingling with fellow volunteers and learning about ACS’ important work, helping to plan the annual Memphis Classic, and driving cancer patients to their treatment appointments.  No matter your interest or time availability the American Cancer Society has a meaningful way for you to get involved in finishing the fight against cancer.

6. Theatre Memphis: Light Prep- Oliver! (May 11th and 12th from 10am-5pm), Light Hang- Oliver! (May 16th-19th from 10am-5pm), Light Focus- Oliver! (May 20th, 23rd, 24th from 10am-5pm)

If you have a love and appreciation for the theatre, then you should consider getting involved with this organization! Theatre Memphis is a non-profit dedicated to making professional theatrical performances.  Even if you do not have much experience in the theatre, you are welcome to volunteer and the department heads would be happy to teach you. Volunteers are also needed from 2+ hours at a time.

7. Urban Bicycle Food Ministry: Burrito Making (Wednesdays from 6-7:30pm) Burrito Delivery (Wednesdays from 7:30-9:30pm)

Feed the homeless in Memphis by delivering burritos on a bike.  Volunteers are needed to help make the burritos as well as bike through Memphis to hand out the burritos.  This is also a great opportunity for professionals to get involved after a day at work.

8. Dorothy Day House of Hospitality: Mondays from 5:30-7pm and Sundays 6-7pm

Join the residents of the Dorothy Day House for dinner or dessert any Sunday or Monday of this month.  Volunteers are asked to provide the dinner or dessert and enjoy getting to know the families.  Be a part of providing these families with a safe environment and help them reestablish their independence.

9. Farmer For A Day: Every Wednesday from 7:30am-5pm

Become a farmer for a day and help Roots Memphis train and launch new farmers in the Mid-South area.  This is a great opportunity for individuals and groups alike.  Volunteers are asked to wear closed-toed shoes, bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.  Enjoy a day in the great outdoors getting dirty and giving back to the community.
