10 Ways To Love Memphis This Month (April 2016)
It’s nearly April, and I’ve teamed up with Volunteer Odyssey again to bring you unique ways to give back to our city again this month. Here are eleven fun ways to show your love for Memphis.
1. Tennessee Shakespeare Company’s Seventh Annual Gala: Friday, April 8th at 6pm.
Tennessee Shakespeare Co’s annual gala will be benefiting their Education and Performance Program, the biggest component of which is the nationally- acclaimed Romeo and Juliet project. Volunteers are needed the week leading up to the event, April 4th-7th from 10am-4pm, to assist with event preparation, and also, volunteers are needed to help in the morning, evening, and the afternoon the day of the event on April 8th.
2. Voluncheers with Volunteer Odyssey at Hope House: Tuesday, April 12th at 6pm.
Join us for the next VolunCheers—our volunteer happy hour is a great way for busy professionals to get involved. This month’s VolunCheers benefits Hope House, and volunteers will be building materials for Hoedown for Hope. Drinks and food provided. Ages 21+. Spots fill up quickly!
3. EPA Day: Thursday, April 14th from 8am- 2:30pm.
Join the EPA in their efforts to protect the environment by volunteering at EPA Day. You will be a part of educating students from Cromwell and Oakhaven Elementary Schools on the dangers of lead in their homes and in child-occupied facilities. Volunteers will be responsible for leading groups of students to each booth at the Fair to ensure no activity is missed and that everything runs smoothly.
4. Latino Memphis’ Volunteer Wine and Cheese Mixer: Thursday, April 14th from 5:30-7pm.
Come mingle with new and existing volunteers of Latino Memphis and learn about upcoming volunteer opportunities. This mixer is Latino Memphis’ way of saying “Gracias” to all of their volunteers in celebration of April being National Volunteer Appreciation Month.
5. Anna’s Closet Dress Sale: Friday, April 15th from 4pm-7pm and Saturday, April 16th from 9:30am-2pm
Volunteer your time at Anna’s Closet Dress Sale in support of the Emmanuel Center’s summer camp. Opportunities are available to help set up the event on April 15th and work the event on April 16th. No experience or materials required, unless you want to donate a prom dress to the event.
6. Levitt Shell’s Fridays of Free Jazz: April 15th and 29th from 6:30-9:30pm.
Enjoy live jazz music and looking for an opportunity to get involved in your community? Volunteer with the Levitt Shell at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library on one of these evenings to help greet the audience and hand out information on Levitt Shell. Be part of what is sure to be a night full of great music!
7. East Buntyn ArtWalk: Saturday, April 16th from 1-7pm.
Come celebrate local artists and musicians in the historic East Buntyn neighborhood. Your help is needed to make this year’s ArtWalk a success, and show Memphis just how great the neighborhood is! Host an artist, help set up, or welcome visitors to the hub at St. James Anglican Church—sign up to help for an hour and two and spend the rest of the time discovering new artists or enjoying the sounds of live music.
8. Shelby Farms Park Conservancy’s Earth Day 5k Fun Run: Sunday, April 17th
Don’t miss the chance to commune with nature and commit to going green while volunteering at the 5th annual Earth Day 5K! Volunteers are needed to help run the race and make sure it goes smoothly. Participants of the race are also invited to plant a tree in the post- race planting ceremony.
9. Walking as One for the Church Health Center: Saturday, April 23rd from 7am- 12:30pm.
Volunteer to be a part of changing your community’s mindset about health and help support a happier and healthier city. Volunteers are needed to help set up the event, work the event, and break down everything at the end of the walk. Your time spent volunteering will be very beneficial in promoting the health of so many people in Memphis!
10. Art by Design: April 27th & 28th from 6-10pm and April 30th from 10am-5pm.
Be part of a unique event in Memphis whose mission is to raise money for the arts in our city. Local interior designers will be creating vignettes at Propcellar, and volunteers are needed to handle ticket sales at the door, greet guests, stand near the showroom to protect the vignettes, and direct people to restrooms.

Bonus! #11 – Humane Society Orientation: Saturday, April 16th from 10-11am
Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity that involves animal? Then this may be just the opportunity for you. In order to be a Humane Society volunteer, you must first attend an orientation session to learn more about this great organization. Can’t make this one? Orientations are held the first Monday of every month at 6pm and the third Saturday of the month at 10am.
