Next Friday: Science of Wine at the Pink Palace
Next Friday night at the Pink Palace, you'll have a chance to taste from a selection of nearly 100 wines, enjoy pairings from nine local restaurants, and attend seminars to learn more at the first-ever Science of Wine event.
There are still some tickets left, but get them ASAP because the Science of Wine is likely to sell out just like the Science of Beer events. The tasting extravaganza will be at the Pink Palace on July 31, 2015 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
There will be 13 different wineries represented, with about six wines at each table. When you enter the Pink Palace, you'll be given a glass of Brut sparkling wine or the JCB rose sparkling wine I describe below. Then you can peruse the tables for different tastings, sign up for seminars, and enjoy food pairings.
Nine local restaurants including Erling Jenson, Restaurant Iris, Porcellino's Las Tortugas, Grove Grill, Whole Foods, Tsunami, Cafe Society, and Nothing Bundt Cakes (VIP only) will offer pairings for select wines. While the menu is subject to change, there's a good chance you'll see oyster bread pudding, bison burger samples, duck confit, and cheeses.
Last week, I had a chance to try three of the nearly 100 wines available for tasting at next Friday's event with event organizer John Mullikin from the PInk Palace and Chris Pratt (no, not that Chris Pratt) from Crown Distributing, which will provide the wine.
We went big to start off with the Suigei Tokubetsu Junami sake wine from Japan. I typically only drink hot sake, so this lightly chilled version was new to me. The Junami is dry and refreshing, and will be perfect paired with the pepper crusted tuna with feta, watermelon, and mint that chef Ben Smith from Tsunami will prepare for the event.
If you also want to expand your horizons beyond the usual (let's be honest, mostly nondescript) hot sake, there will be a couple of sake experts a the Science of Wine event with several options for you to taste and a chance to learn more.
Next, we tried the Jean-Charles Boisset (JCB) Sparkling No. 69 from France. This is a rose sparkling wine, which means it's a mix of red and white wines and is bubbly. Normally when you see a pink wine, you think "sweet" but the No. 69 is crisp, flavorful, and a bit fruity without being overwhelmingly sweet. I liked this one so much I may or may not have taken it home with me.
We tasted the Butternut Chardonnay from California next. While it has a big aroma, the taste is lighter than your typical rich, buttery Chardonnay. This style of wine isn't my jam, but I know lots of casual drinkers who will love this one.
Finally, we tasted the Gravel Bar Alluvial Red Wine Blend, which in my opinion was the best of the day. It's mostly a Shriaz and Cabernet blend, which means it's a bold red wine with a little bit of spice to it: think hints of cherries and cloves. It'll go great with any kind of meat or flavorful food.
If any of these sound interesting, make a note of them and look for them at the Science of Wine. Keep in mind that I'm somewhere in between a novice vino-taster and a sommelier, so my tasting notes below are just my opinions.
