The Rec Room is kid-friendly during the day, but more appropriate for 21-and-up in the evenings. Go here for more info.

*Flag City Freedom Celebration, Navy Lake in Millington, July 3, 4 p.m., free (parking $5)
Millington knows how to throw down for Independence Day. The city and the Millington naval base are teaming up for the Flag City Freedom Celebration. Bring a picnic, cooler and lawn chair to Navy Lake for an impressive fireworks display.

*Memphis Redbirds Red, White, and BOOM, AutoZone Park, July 3, gates open at 4 p.m., $6 (advance) and up
Just like every Friday, the Redbirds host a pregame Block Party starting at 4 p.m. with $2 drafts and live music. First pitch is at 6:05 p.m., when the Rebirds take on the Oklahoma City Dodgers while wearing special red, white, and blue themed jerseys and hats. And of course, fireworks after the game.

The annual Stars and Stripes 5K is a rare thing – a race that starts at 7 p.m. instead of 7 a.m. The race will start and finish at Tiger Lane, and they'll have live music, free barbecue and free beer for participants, and fireworks after the race.

Cordova Fourth of July Parade, Cordova Community Center, July 4, 9:30 a.m., free
The annual Cordova Community Center 4th of July Parade has a particular kind of small town charm. Fun fact: it's the only Independence Day parade in Memphis with a judging category for "Best Decorated Float, Wagon or Horse".

Central Gardens July 4th Parade, Carr Avenue, Saturday, 9:30 a.m., free, all ages/kid-friendly
Join in a 40-year tradition of celebrating America in midtown during the Central Gardens parade. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and will span the 1400 block of Carr Avenue between Rozelle and Willett. Registration to march starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Rozelle corner. Expect lots of decked-out Midtowners, a fire truck, mounted police, an appearance from Mayor Wharton, and free hot dogs and sno cones.

Overton Square Fourth of July Specials, Overton Square, July 4, all day, prices and ages vary
Some shops and bars in Overton Square will have specials and special hours for July 4. *Southaven July 4th Celebration, Snowden Grove Amphitheatre, July 4, 6:30 p.m., free

*Olive Branch Independence Day Celebration, Olive Branch City Park, July 4, 7 p.m., free
Here's another from across the border. The 16th annual Olive Branch Independence Day Celebration is a picnic-friendly celebration with fireworks at 9 p.m, plus food, vendors, and a KIds Zone.

*4th of July Celebration, Mud Island River Park/downtown, July 4, 10 a.m./fireworks at 9:30 p.m., free to watch
This is the one everyone's asking about: the usual downtown fireworks will launch from the south tip of Mud Island at 9:30 p.m. on July 4. The best views will be from Tom Lee Park, Beale Street Landing, other spots along the river, or any downtown rooftops you manage to get access to. Mud Island will open to the public at 10 a.m. and festivities and live music begin at 6 p.m.

*Twilight Sky Terrace Party, Madison Hotel Rooftop, July 4, doors at 4 p.m., 21 and up, $20 cover

Mud Island always has a large fireworks show that can be seen from almost anywhere downtown. You can see if from Beale and on top of any building/hotel, but make your way down towards the river for a better view.
