Tuesday News Update: A Million Events, Giving Back, and a Wine Dinner Giveaway

Today in Memphis news, we have a ton of festivals and fun events, volunteer opportunities, our city's latest magazine features, a new community newsletter, and a giveaway for a "wine" dinner at Schweinehaus.

- German restaurant and Overton Square hot spot Schweinehaus is hosting a "wine" dinner on Monday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. where you can enjoy five courses paired with Boone's Farm wine-like beverages. You really need to read the menu for this one. Tickets are just $42 for this once-in-a-lifetime experience and I am giving away a pair! Instructions for the giveaway are in the last bullet point of this post.

Events

- The Revival at the Tennessee Brewery kicks off this Thursday at lunchtime. (I'll be doing a live podcast starting at 5 p.m. with special guests from the Brewery and all the usual Memphis loving. Click here to listen live on Thursday or subscribe on iTunes to make sure you hear all four episodes of I Love Memphis Live From The Brewery (biweekly through the end of May).

- Actress Kristin Davis (Sex and the City) will be in Memphis on April 15, 2015 to promote an animal rights film "Gardeners of Eden" and you can go to the screening for just $30. Get more info in this article from the Commercial Appeal and buy tickets here.

- Memphis Made Brewing taproom will be open on Saturdays starting on April 25. They're marking the occasion with a "Hopped" spring beer party from noon to 6 p.m. It's free and all ages to enter (of course you must pay for your beer and be 21 to drink). Aldo's, Food Geek, and Fresh Gulf Shrimp will be on hand along with Mighty Souls Brass Band and Goner Records.

- Are you a karaoke master? Do you like to dance? Are you an animal lover? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you might be interested in the Humane Society's Bark After Dark Karaoke fundraiser on April 17 at 409 S. Main. Tickets are $40 and include seven tickets to be used for singing slots, drinks, and games.

- Want to wear your wedding dress again while supporting a Memphis institution? The Wedding Dress Ball on April 18 in Memphis is your opportunity to do so. The dress-up cocktail party will be held at Propcellar (2585 Summer Ave.) and will benefit St. Mary's Soup Kitchen. Go here for details.

- Memphis is drowning in festivals, in a good way. If you haven't checked out the Insider's Guide to Memphis Crawfish Festivals, the post about the Mid-South Food Truck Festival (which has been updated to include the list of food trucks), the Coliseum's Roundhouse Revival, the Africa in April cultural fest, the Healthy Memphis Food Festival, or the list of Spring Events, well, then, there are all the links.

Volunteering

- The Broad Avenue Spring Art Walk is Friday April 24 and they need volunteers to help out! Email [email protected] if you're interested. Volunteers will be entered to win prizes, including perhaps one of those Five In One Memphis map prints.

- Volunteer fairs will never be the same thanks to Memphis organization Volunteer Odyssey, which launched a new virtual volunteer fair called Volio last week. Instead of sifting through websites, Facebook pages, or brochures in order to find your next volunteering project, watch 90 second videos about local organizations to find your match. This is totally cool.

- Speaking of volunteering, if your teen needs ideas for community service, summer volunteering, or scholarship hours projects, newly re-birthed Volunteer Memphis/Mid-South published this lovely blog post with 25 Opportunities for Mid-South Teens To Volunteer.

News

- Memphis made the cover of the Spring/Summer 2015 Rails to Trails biking magazine.

- Yesterday, local musician Robby Grant released a trippy, fun new music video for "White Squared Potato" a song from his latest Vending Machine album "Let The Little Things Go". Check out the world premiere on the Memphis Flyer site.

- Pour one out for dive bar Kudzu's, which closed this past weekend.

- If you missed, there was a big, beautifully done City Portrait on Memphis in the April/May edition of Garden & Gun magazine. Props to my colleagues at the CVB who worked for more than a year to help this happen.

- Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid is not only going to open on schedule, but a few days early, on April 30.

- Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is moving to downtown Memphis after years out in the 'burbs. The race is on October 31 and will begin at AutoZone Park.

- For better or worse, Riverside Drive is going back to four lanes of traffic by June.

- You can now access the Memphis Bike Map online or order a hard copy. This landing page also has lots of info on biking in Memphis and where to rent bikes.

- The Growler in Cooper Young is now "Hammer and Ale" and they have food like sandwiches, broccoli cole slaw, pretzels, and a vanilla beer float, according to the Memphis Flyer.

- A new home decor and interior design shop called Southern Avenue Company opened its doors in Germantown last week. They're located right across the railroad tracks from the Commissary.

- If you live in East Memphis or Midtown and don't take the paper, the Commercial Appeal will be delivering a new free weekly paper to your doorstep (or driveway) every Thursday. It's filled with community news and info. You can even submit photos for publication.

- Giveaway info: Are you still reading? Did you scroll directly to this bullet point after reading the top of the post? Either way, congrats! You will now receive instructions on how to win two tickets to Schweinehaus' Boone's Farm "wine" dinner on April 20: leave me a comment on this post telling me what dish you would pair with Boone's Farm.

I'll pick a favorite announce the winner in 48 hours (at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 8th).

Don't want to take a chance on losing? Go ahead and call Schweinehaus to reserve your spot.

Boones farm pairs well with disillusioned underaged college kids :)  Food wise however, I would pair it with bacon encrusted cheese filled hot dogs wrapped in Pilsbury cresent rolls and baked to the perfect golden crispness :)

I feel like boones deserve some silly county fair style food, but obviously sausage should be involved given schweinhouse. I'd do funnel cake with a chicken apple sausage on top and the sugar dusting should have a  bit of a smokey flavor mixed in, and then some butter popcorn jelly beans for garnish on top.

The now-retired Boone's Farm Sun Peak Peach paired with everyone's favorite Girl Scout cookie-   the trefoil. But not just one. Like, the whole sleeve of trefoils.  This is a fantastic, fun idea for a dinner! I applaud whoever came up with it.

I'd pair a flour tortilla with some cheese that might or might not have mold on it. Along with a drizzle of sriracha and some barbecue sauce nuked in the microwave for about a minute and a half. They both look and taste like sadness. Mmmmmm that's how I remember Boones Farm.

Gotta do the Wurst Platter. The crispy and salty mix with the overbearingly sweetness of the Boones farm will make it almost bearable to drink for me....my wife loves that stuff though.

I've heard that Boone's Farm goes really well with typical broke college student fare, like ramen (dressed up with condiments from takeout) or macaroni and cheese (from a box, with powdered cheese).
