5 Things To Do This Weekend: 12/19 – 12/21
Happy Friday, Memphis! Here are the five things you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend.
Giveaway over! Congrats to commenter Julie!
Today I'm doing a giveaway for a pair of tickets for the Memphis Symphony Orchestra's annual Home for the Holidays performance (see #4) on Saturday. You can pick from the 2:30 or the 7:30 performance if you win. To win, leave me a comment on this post telling me you want to go!
1. Zoo Lights, Memphis Zoo, Friday – Sunday, 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., $6 members / $8 non-members
Go to the Zoo after Zoo hours to check out thousands of holiday lights in displays, "snow", reindeer, Polar Express train, and Santa. You can see it all from a 90 ft. tall ferris wheel ($5), take a camel ride ($4) or ice skate ($6) every night this weekend or select nights until Dec. 30.
2. Lucero Family Christmas, Minglewood Hall, Friday, doors at 7 p.m., $24, all ages
Join the Lucero family for their annual Christmas party at Minglewood Hall. The band will be joined by Mighty Souls Brass Band. $1 of the show's proceeds will benefit a local charity.
3. House Happening 2, Woodruff-Fontaine House, Friday – Sunday, $25, all ages
This weekend, Project Motion Modern Dance Collective is taking over the Woodruff-Fontaine House in Victorian Village. Each room will have a different kind of holiday-inspired performance. Shows are Friday at 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. (9:30 one is PWYC), Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m..
4. Home for the Holidays, Cannon Center, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., $15 and up/$5 for students, all ages/kid-friendly
This year, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra is included Hollywood holiday favorites (The Grinch, Rudolph, and yes, Frozen) into their annual traditional holiday performance. This might be a good opportunity to introduce the kids to classical music. If you want a pair of free tickets, leave me a comment on this post by 2 p.m.
5. Ugly Sweater Run, Shelby Farms Park, Sunday, 3 p.m., $30/$40 day of race if available, all ages/kid-friendly
Don you now your worst holiday apparel and join your fellow jingle-belled runners and walkers at Shelby Farms for the "merriest 5K". You can burn off the calories of the hot chocolate, beer, or hard cider at the finish line.
Don't forget to leave me a comment if you want to go to the Symphony on Saturday. I'll do the drawing at 2 p.m. today.
A few other notes about this weekend: Choose 901 and Grizzlies bloggers 3 Shades of Blue will host a Grizzlies Watch Party on Sunday afternoon and the Dixon will host holiday music in the galleries on Sunday. Also, you only have a few more days to check out most of the ongoing events like Snowy Nights, Starry Nights, and Zoo Lights, so check out those and others on the Holiday Events Guide. Or make your plans for New Year's Eve next week on the NYE Guide here.
Another note: On Monday, the Memphis Tigers AAC Champions will take on BYU in the Miami Beach Bowl in Miami. If you can't head down to south Florida, you can still support the team by heading to Brookhaven Pub in East Memphis for the official Watch Party on Monday at 1 p.m.
