5 Things To Do This Weekend: 8/15 – 8/17 (plus one!)

Happy Friday Memphis! Here are the five things you won't want to miss in Memphis this weekend, plus one! But first, a random picture from the week.

I took this picture at the new Fresh Market in midtown, which opened Wednesday. Read more here.

1. Spillit Story Slam: Competition, Amurica Photo, Friday, 8 p.m., $10, 18 and up
It's a very special Spillit event tonight – you pay $10 to get in, but I Love Memphis is covering the bar tab (so you just leave a tip for your friendly bartender!) The theme for this month's Spillit event is Competition…and yes, it's a competition, but it's also an opportunity to share five minutes of YOU with a room full of kind folks who appreciate stories.

2. Candlelight Vigil, Gates of Graceland, Friday, 8:30 p.m., free, all ages
The Vigil is the centerpiece of Elvis Week, and all visitors and locals should do it at least once. It's a somber, candlelit walk past Elvis' grave at Graceland all night until the day of the King's death (August 16th). Elvis Presley Blvd. is closed, and many people set up elaborate roadside shrines. You'll probably be in line for a while, so pack a snack and plan to make some friends.

3. Broad Avenue Sidewalk Sale, Broad Avenue Arts District, Saturday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., free, all ages
The shops and galleries on Broad are clearing out their summer stuff to make room for fall, so there will be lots of sales. Check out the list of participating vendors here, and read more about Broad Avenue here.

4. End of Summer Bash with Wick-It The Instigator, Hi-Tone, Saturday, 10 p.m., $10 advance/$12 door, 18 and up

What better way to end the summer of 2014 than a mashup of mashup DJs at the Hi-Tone? Bust a move with DJ CRUMBZ, Ify Ify Music, DJ Jordan Rogers (who will also be DJing the I Love Memphis Birthday Party), Wick-It The Instigator and Gutta Chick.

5. Bardog 6th Anniversary Party and Breakaway 5K, Bardog Tavern, Sunday, race at 9 a.m., street party at noon – until, $30 advance/$35 day of race, all ages
The annual Bardog Anniversary Alley Party is back this Sunday. It's time to celebrate six years of sliders, daily dogs, cold brews and brunch specials at Bardog on Monroe downtown. It's also the 5th anniversary of the Breakaway Bardog 5K, one of Memphis' most popular races. Read more here.

Bonus thing to do this weeked: The I Love Memphis 5th Birthday Party is this Sunday from 2 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. at Wiseacre Taproom. Everyone is invited, and we'll have free cake from Frost, awesome door prizes, food from Fuel Food Truck, music from Mighty Souls Brass Band, and more. Get all the details here, and don't forget to bring your debit/credit cards for beer, as Wiseacre does not accept cash.

Have a great weekend, and I hope to see y'all on Sunday!

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.

Hope to see everyone at the Sidewalk Sale on Broad tomorrow!

  2. Sarah says:

Just a heads up, the Bardog race is on Sunday August 17, not Saturday, as you have it listed in the title. That might be confusing for some.

  3. Check out Circus Saturdays workshops at Co-Motion Studio in Crosstown this Saturday 11-4:30! Beginner level workshops in hula hooping and parkour for adults and kids. Plus next weekend we have intermediate hoopdance, juggling, and staff workshops. More details: http://www.comotionmemphis.com/event/circus-saturdays-parkour-intro-to-hooping/

  4. Btw, there is also an Elvis movie marathon at the summer drive-in Saturday night.

  5. Ellen says:

Hi Holly new to Memphis, is there a site I.can visit for more kid friendly events?
