The 2014 Orpheum Summer Movie Series Begins Tonight

The Orpheum's annual Summer Movie series is one of my favorite annual events, and it begins tonight with a zombie-themed double feature. The theatre, which is primarily used for Broadway shows returns to its movie house roots on weekends in summer. The air conditioner is cranked up, there are all kinds of pre-show shenanigans (like costume contests, themed cocktails, etc.), and people get very, very into whatever is playing.

I love the Summer Movie Series especially because it was one of the first things I did when I moved here nine years ago. It was August, I had just moved into the dorm at The University of Memphis the day before, and I didn't know a soul. A few girls who lived on my hall convinced me to tag along with them to see Gone With The Wind at "the cool old theatre downtown". I left the Orpheum that night with the beginnings of a love for Memphis and friends I keep in contact with today. Good times.

Historically, the series has featured older classic movies, but in the past few years, the Orpheum has started introducing some newer favorites. This year we have a few double features and a few family matinees.

Admission to all of the movies is $7 for adults and $5 for kids, and seating is general admission.
