Taste Test: Memphis Chef Jennifer McCullough's Seafood Dips

Taste Test: Memphis Chef Jennifer McCullough's Seafood Dips

Memphis Chef Jennifer McCullough recently released her line of seafood dips in Kroger. I hosted a little taste-testing party with a couple of girlfriends to try the three available flavors: Herbed Crawfish, Buffalo-style Shrimp, and Southwestern Crab. Here is what we thought.

Chef Jenn gave me three packages, each emblazoned with her picture and the slogan: "Dip, Cracker, Bottle of Wine. Done." We followed these suggestions almost exactly. She instructed me to heat the frozen dips in the oven, not the microwave, and gave me bags of tortilla chips, Scoops, and crackers to pair with each.

We put all three in the oven at the same time, and it took about 25 minutes for all to get nice and hot. We tried the Herbed Crawfish Dip on crackers first. It was rich, very creamy, and didn't taste like something from the frozen food section at all. Several of us thought that it could work as a spread on a bagel or sandwich.

Next we tried the Buffalo-style Shrimp Dip on Scoops. This had a bolder flavor than the Crawfish. With the Scoops, this dip was a little too salty for us, so we tried it with celery and sliced green bell pepper and enjoyed that more. It seemed like the perfect thing to serve at a Super Bowl party.

The Southwestern Crab Dip with Cornbread Crunch was the hands-down favorite. We tried it with blue corn tortilla chips and some veggies, and it was delicious on everything. It had a fresh seafood taste, there was plenty of crab in the dip, and the crunchy topping was a good touch.

These three dips, along with some fruit and wine, was plenty of food for the five of us to have for dinner. We didn't quite finish everything, but we came close. Chef Jenn is working on a fourth flavor, Crab Florentine Artichoke Dip, which should be available around the holidays.

You can pick up Chef Jenn's Seafood Dips in the frozen food sections of Kroger stores in Tennesse, Arkansas, and Mississippi. You can also visit her website for more info.

Thank you for the write up and great feedback, Holly.  Photos look fantastic!  Love the serving suggestions for the "Buffalo-Style Shrimp Dip." The fourth dip will be available soon....will actually be picking up my "Sweet Chili Firecracker Shrimp Dip."  Anyone ever had Bang-Bang Shrimp????  All dips available now at Kroger for $5.99 with your Kroger card.  Stock up for the holidays!

Are we all too sophisticated for a "grocery store dip" or God forbid a review of the aforementioned? Big shoes... Just sayin...

Also, what's wrong with supporting a local chef with a new product?

Took a variety of Jennifer's dips on a  girls' beach trip - a big hit with my foodie friends!  They all wish they could buy some in their home Krogers in Atlanta and Texas !  So good!
