Save the Date: Compulsive Gamblers Reunite for Church Health Center
Mark your calendar: the Compuslive Gamblers (aka, the Oblivians before they were the Oblivians) are playing a special show to benefit the Church Health Center.
Before Greg Cartwright and Jack Yarber formed the Oblivians, they (along with Bushrod Thomas and Fields Trimble) were the Compulsive Gamblers. The band's sound is a little more like Cartwright's other band, the Reigning Sound than the Oblivians' brand of garage punk. The Compulsive Gamblers sound a little like a 1960s girl group that got louder guitars (and was, you know, not girls).
The Church Health Center has been trying to book them to play Rock for Love for years, but they've never been able to get the dates to work. Everything lined up this weekend, though, and the Gamblers are playing a benefit show for the CHC at the Young Ave. Deli on Friday night. J.D. Reager and the Cold Blooded Three will open, and every bit of the $10 cover will go to the CHC, which provides healthcare to Memphis' working uninsured.
