Recommended Eating: Chicken Tostadas from Las Tortugas
Today's lesson: when the guy behind the counter at Las Tortugas (in this case, the always lovely Jonathan Magallanes) recommends something, you should probably order it. See, for example, these chicken tostadas.
Las Tortugas takes a homemade, round tortilla chip and piles a handful of shredded marinated chicken and lettuce on top. Then, they make a little pinwheel out of perfect little avocado slices and squeeze a little dollop of spicy red sauce on top (sorry I'm not more descriptive - I forgot to ask what that sauce was). The best part? You get two of them, and they come with sides of crème fraîche and salsa verde.
For best results, wash them down with an agua fresca, which is slushie-like juice drink made from fresh fruit.
Both Last Tortugas locations are open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. It gets completely packed during regular lunch and dinner hours, so if you don't want to deal with a ton of people, go mid-afternoon (though, it was still pretty busy at 2:30 p.m. today).
