The Calvary Waffle Shop Returns Feb. 14 – March 22

Lent begins this week, which means the return of one of Memphis' favorite spring traditons: the Calvary Waffle Shop.

Calvary Waffle Shop

Now in its 90th year, the Waffle Shop is more than a tradition – it's an instiution.

Every weekday from Ash Wednesday until just before Easter Sunday, 75 volunteers will serve about 500 lunches per day in Calvary's basement. The menu changes a little bit every week day, but some staples – tomato aspic, chicken hash, peppermint ice cream, waffles – are always available.

A visiting preacher delivers a short, completely optional sermon every day at 12:05. If you're pressed for time, this year you can eat in a special quiet room and watch the sermon via telecast.

If all of this sounds great, but you can't make it downtown during the day, the Waffle Shop has added additional evening hours this year. On Wednesday nights, they'll serve their full menu from 5:15 p.m. until 6:15 p.m., with a sermon starting at 6:30 p.m.
