New Favorite Place: Southern Meat Market
New Favorite Place: Southern Meat Market
How did I manage to go so many years without the Southern Meat Market?
The market, which has been open in the same location since 1903, doesn't look like much when you walk in, but it's a meat wonderland. Here's why:
1. They'll cut your meat to order. I wanted some pork shoulder, and the butcher brought a giant, whole shoulder out, plopped it on the counter and asked me which part I wanted. I pointed, he cut, and I walked out with a perfect, crock-pot sized piece of meat.
2. They've got just about everything. All of the basics (pork, beef, chicken) are there, and they've also got fish, sausage (of various kinds), rabbits, and seasonal meats, like venison.
3. The prices are insane. They're much lower than Kroger, and you get to pick exactly what you want. My pork, which was about two and a half pounds, cost less than $5. My friend John walked out with a giant bag full of venison steaks and sausage for $20.
4. The staff is friendly, and if you're a repeat customer (or if they just feel so inclined), they'll hand write coupons on scraps of paper for you.
Southern Meat Market is about to move (they're part of the Chinese Sub Shop redevelopment zone), but they're going to reopen on Park just west of Pete and Sam's. No word on when the moving date will be, but I'll update the address when I have a new one.
