The South Main Arts District is turning into a giant artists market and street fair for this weekend's River Arts Fest. Assignment #272 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to spend a day at the festival.

During the three days of River Arts Fest, South Main turns into a giant, family-friendly street fair with artists and vendors selling their work. The festival isn't just about shopping. There will also be hands-on art stations, artists doing live demonstations of their techniques and tons of food from local vendors.

The organizers also do everything they can to pack the festival with local musical acts of all kinds. This year, there are more than 50 acts performing on the festival's three stages (though, I can't, at press time, find a list of who they are).

River Arts Fest is charging admission this year, but only at certain times. Admission to the festival is free on Friday and before noon on Sunday. Admission is $5 all day on Saturday and after 12 p.m. on Sunday.
