Having honored over 550 music pioneers since its launch in 1985 (like Sam Phillips, Charley Pride, Elvis Presley, Rufus Thomas, Bobby Bland and Willie Mitchell), United Music Heritage's annual Music Pioneer Awards are nights of tribute to trailblazing musicians from Memphis.

United Music Heritage, Inc. (UMH) wanted to show their appreciation and admiration for the musicians and artists who have created a path for the talented artists of today. “We wanted to say thank you for giving us the soundtracks to our life and making sure we have a song in our heart”, said UMH Inc. board member Dan Greer.

This year, the Music Pioneer Awards honor Jerry Lee Lewis and doo-wop / R&B group The Impressions (known for hits like “For Your Precious Love”).  We also honor Ms. Jennifer Spiwak, a promising new artist Memphis native.

The 2012 Music Pioneer Awards will be held on Aug. 23, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at the New Daisy Theater on world famous Beale St.

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
