365 Things to Do in Memphis #227: Borrow a Book from the Little Free Library

The Little Free Library is just like a regular library, only without cards, due dates or fines. It's also in someone's yard. Assignment #227 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to borrow a book from the Little Free Library.

It's also a great reason to take a walk - you'll probably completely miss the birdhouse-sized library from a car.

The Flyer has a big story on the library's creators, but the point is this: a midtown couple put a small box at the edge of their property and filled it up with books that are free for the taking. Anyone can take a book whenever they like (when I was there today, I snagged a slightly battered copy of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being").

When you're done with your book or have a book you'd like to pass on, you return it to the library for recirculation.

There was something like this in the town where I went to college, only it was housed in a repurposed newspaper box. There was one box for books and one for music and people would frequently leave homemade mix tapes, magazines and books for the taking. I got a lot of use out of those boxes, so I'm excited that one has popped up in Memphis. Here's hoping that will follow in different neighborhoods and for different media.

The Little Free Library is always open.

This is great. Definitely going to drop some books off there! Keshia- the line is "don't forget, the public library is free, too!"
