365 Things to Do in Memphis #217: Eat a Ripley Tomato

I'm sitting here, eating slice after slice of the giant Ripley tomato I picked up at Easy Way this morning and trying to figure out what it is that makes these tomatoes, grown about 45 minutes north of Memphis, far superior to regular tomatoes.

Assignment #216 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to eat a Ripley Tomato.

Ripley Tomato, Easy Way, Memphis, Tenn.

I seriously pity people who - for reasons of geography or ignorance or whatever - don't get to eat these regularly. They're thick and sweet, and they actually have a flavor. They're good in just about anything, but my perferred preparation is sliced on a plate with a little bit of salt.

Ripley tomatoes are in season now, and you can find them at Memphis Easy Way stores, most of the farmers markets (the Cordova one definitely has them), and some grocery stores.
