5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 7/6 – 7/8

Happy Friday! With the awkward mid-week holiday, it feels like we've been granted a bonus weekend. Here are five things to do with it:

1. Summer Group Show Opening, L. Ross Gallery, Friday, 6 p.m., free

Art openings are pretty great – you get to see (and discuss) new art, they're usually crowded with fancy people, and they've always got air conditioning. In the case of the Summer Group Show at L. Ross Gallery, they've also got works by a ton of excellent Mid-South artists like Eli Gold, Ali Cavanaugh, Jeni Stallings, Pam Hassler, Jeri Ledbetter and more.

2. Freak Engine, TheatreWorks, Friday, 11:30 p.m., $5

Memphis' longest-running improv show returns this week for their monthly engagement at TheatreWorks. If you've been before, don't worry – no show is the same as the last. Cover is $5 and audience participation will be encouraged.

3. Eddie Griffin, Cannon Center, Saturday, 7:30 p.m., $39 – $59

Comedian Eddie Griffin (and a huge handful of his friends) will be at the Cannon Center on Saturday night as part of his "You Can Tell Em I Said It" tour. Joe Torry, Teddy Carpenter, Antoine Blackman and V Mack will open the show.

4. Cycle Memphis Anniversary Ride, Cooper-Young Gazebo, Saturday, 8 p.m., free

Cycle Memphis July Ride, Memphis, Tenn.

Cycle Memphis, our favorite free monthly group ride, is all grown up – Saturday's ride is their one year anniversary. Don't bring cake – just bring yourself, your bike, your helmet and maybe a bike stereo and some tools. The ride leaves from the Cooper-Young Gazebo at 7:15 p.m. and goes at a medium pace for 15 miles. Here's the route.

5. Memphis Food Truckers Rodeo, Shelby Farms, Sunday, 12 p.m., free

The weekly Memphis Food Truck Alliance rodeo is moving from Broad Ave. to Shelby Farms this weekend. About a dozen trucks will park at Patriot Lake at Shelby Farms from 12 p.m. until about 3 p.m. There will be live music from Standby for Mars. Most trucks take plastic, but bring some cash just in case.

If none of these events are your thing, there are plenty more on the blog's calendar. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a blast. Come back and tell me about it on Monday.

I went to the food truck rodeo about 2 weeks ago, and there were only 3 trucks there serving lunch.  The place was packed with people (average line to eat was over an hour).  Were there more trucks at the last one?

  • @Leefordlye – There were. The food truck alliance noted all of the problems at the first rodeo and have fixed a lot of them. The Shelby Farms website says that there will be 12 – 15 trucks at the one this weekend.
