365 Things to Do in Memphis #174: Try the Weird Gelato Flavor

Maybe I'm crazy, but if I've got a choice between chocolate gelato and cheese flavored gelato, I'm choosing cheese every time. Assignment #174 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to stop playing it safe with your gelato selection.

There's no point in sticking with the standards, especially at Yolo, where their evil genius gelato chef Will Johnson makes flavors like mascarpone and avocado cilantro.

My new favorite combination is said avocado cilantro and salted caramel in a waffle cone. The avocado is sweet and mild (and the cilantro is more of a hint than a hammer) and it goes with the salted caramel gelato like Cirque du Soleil goes with Michael Jackson: two crazy-but-awesome things that are surprisingly less ridiculous together.

What's the weirdest gelato combination you've tried so far?

I write about what’s going on with Memphis music, food, arts, events, sports, people, and culture. Memphians love Elvis and barbeque with a passion that must be seen to be believed, but there is so much more to this place.
