I'm about to show you a picture of a veggie plate that I ordered at Soul Fish. Take a look at it and ask yourself: which one of these is not like the others?

If you were able to correctly identify the bowl of mac'n'cheese as not a vegetable, then congratulations! You're right. You're probably also not in Memphis.

Assignment #169 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to pretend like mac'n'cheese is a vegetable.

Mac'n'cheese is the most common non-vegetable vegetable, but spaghetti is also fairly common. The best places to do this are traditional, Southern meat-and-three restaurants (for the uninitiated, that's one meat, three "vegetables") like Soul Fish, Little Tea Shoppe, Stone Soup Cafe, Elegant Farmer and the Cupboard.

What's your favorite veggie plate combination?

  • Best is BLIND BEAR.  Order a veggie plate.  You get 4 veggies… I recommend the mac-n-cheese, turkey soup, banana pudding, and a caesar salad.  Which one of those is actually a veggie?!?
