365 Things to Do in Memphis #155: Get the King’s Autograph
Assignment #155 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to have something signed by Memphis' king.
No, not that King. The other one – Jerry "the King" Lawler.
Wrestler Jerry Lawler (who I always refer to by his full name for some reason) is nationally known for his Andy Kaufmann-related antics, but in Memphis, he's one of our local heroes. He was the best part of Saturday Morning Wresting, he's run for mayor a few times, and he pops up in all kinds of unexpected places (like during timeouts in NBA playoff games), ready to bring joy to the masses.
He's also a super nice guy – I've yet to see him turn down an autograph request from a fan. He procured a Sharpie and signed a sheet of paper from my notebook after I met him at the Orpheum last summer without any hesitation.
Next time you see him out, if the moment is right, get his autograph. There are few better Memphis souvenirs than that.
