365 Things to Do in Memphis #150: The FedEx St. Jude Classic
Grab your "Hush Y'all" sign – assignment #150 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to go to the FedEx St. Jude Classic (and while you're there, eat a Pronto Pup.)
Some of the best players in golf come to Southwind every year for the week-long tournament.
The Classic starts with a Pro-Am tournaments on Monday and Wednesday that allow average Memphians to team up with professional golfers and celebrities (for a price). The PGA tournament game starts on Thursday and runs through Sunday afternoon.
Most importantly, though, the FedEx St. Jude Classic is a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The tournament has generated more than $25 million dollars for the hospital since 1970.
Reminders of the cause are constant at Southwind. People who live along the course hang “We (heart) St. Jude! banners from their balconies. At one hole, it's a tradition that St. Jude patients served as assistant caddies for the golfers.
Overall, the FedEx St. Jude classic is a low key good time. I recommend finding a shady spot (there are some shaded bleachers) and watching the pros play. Southwind is a friendly place, and the players have been known to joke with fans and sign autographs (especially during the Pro-Am).
Pro tip: pack sunscreen and keep your phone on silent. Don't be that guy.
