5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 5/4 – 5/6
Happy Friday, Memphis! This weekend is going to be insane – it's the official start to Memphis in May, the Grizz are in the playoffs and there are more great bands playing around town than you can shake a stick at.
Here are the top five can't-miss things happening around town this weekend:
1. Beale Street Music Festival, Tom Lee Park, Friday – Sunday, all day, $32 / day
By now, you guys know what happens at the annual Beale Street Music Festival. More than 60 bands will play the festival's three stages, blues tent and blues shack over the course of three days. Check the survival guide, check the weather, then go forth and party.
2. Red Hot Chick Lit Review, 1884 Lounge at Minglewood Hall, Friday, 7 p.m., $10
Forget romance novels and trashy beach reads – on Friday night, 10 of Memphis' finest female authors will read their coolest, funniest and sassiest pieces in front of an audience at the 1884 Lounge. The stories will be published after the show in the Red Hot Chick Lit Review.
3. Dick Dale, Hi-Tone Cafe, Friday, 9 p.m., $20
Surf guitar legend Dick Dale is turning 75 on Friday night, and he's chosen to celebrate his birthday with us. The last time he played the Hi-Tone, the venue was clown-car packed and he played for at least an hour an a half with an enthusiasm and verve that you wouldn't expect from a septuagenarian.
4. Grizzlies vs. Clippers Watch Party, AutoZone Park, Saturday, 3 p.m., free
If you can't make it to LA for game three in the Grizzlies playoff series with the Clippers, it's ok – you know you'd rather watch the game in Memphis with thousands of likeminded Grizz fans anyway. The team is hosting a watch party at AutoZone Park on Saturday. The game will be shown on the ballpark's 13-foot screen and the Grizz Girls and Claw Crew will be there to give the home game experience.
5. Art Bike Parade, Memphis College of Art, Saturday, 3 p.m., free
Decorate your two-wheeler and pedal to the Memphis College of Art on Saturday afternoon for the Art Bike Parade. Check-in is at 2 p.m., and the parade starts at 3 p.m. There's no need to register – all you have to do is show up and ride. If you're not riding, grab a seat on the MCA lawn for the best view.
If none of these events are your thing, there are always more on the blog's calendar. There's also a bonus 6th Thing to Do This Weekend on Tumblr. No matter what you do this weekend, I hope that you have a blast.
