365 Things to Do in Memphis #138: Have a Dance Party in Stereo Alley

There are a lot of alleys in downtown Memphis, but only one of them is fit for a dance party. Assignment #138 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to bust a move in Stereo Alley (or, barring that, just go check it out).

Stereo Alley, Memphis, Tenn.

In the 1960s, an alley off of Second St. was designated as "Stereo Alley" as part of a city-wide alley beautification project. Local radio station KYLX set up speakers and (somewhat inexplicably) broadcasted music into the narrow space.

There's no music in Stereo Alley these days, but the metal sign at the entrance is still there. I would love to see bands play little miniature block parties there or it turned into a place where you could go if you just needed an afternoon dance break. Maybe that's what KYLX was hoping for all those years ago.

Got sent on a Memphis scavenger hunt this weekend and discovered Stereo Alley. And yes, we had a mini dance party.
