365 Things to Do in Memphis #123: See a Movie at the Orpheum

Some movies aren't meant to be watched on your laptop. Assignment #123 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to take in a classic movie on the big screen during the Orpheum's Summer Movie Series.

This year's schedule may be their best ever:

Orpheum Summer Movie Schedule

This year, the Orpheum has kept fan favorites like "Casablanca", "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" while adding in some newer classics like "Spinal Tap", "Donnie Darko" and "Almost Famous".

If you only make it to one, I recommend the sing along showing of "Grease". Five years later, my mom still talks about going to see the sing along "Sound of Music".

Seeing a movie at the Orpheum isn't quite like going to a regular theater. Before the films, there's live organ music, trivia and costume contests, cartoons and themed cocktail hours. People show up in costume (whether or not there's a contest), and there's a fun, collective feeling to seeing something that you're familiar with in the company of likeminded people.

The Orpheum summer film series starts on Friday, May 25 and includes a film every weekend until September 14. Tickets to all of the screenings are $7 for adults and $5 for kids, with Indie Memphis members getting $2 off.
