365 Things to Do in Memphis #124: PechaKucha!
365 Things to Do in Memphis #124: PechaKucha!
For those of you who - because of hours spent bored work or school - dread sitting through Powerpoint presentations, Memphis' PechaKucha night might change your mind about the humble slide show.
Here's how it works: each speaker prepares a presentation with 20 slides that automatically advance every 20 seconds. They then stand up and give a five minute presentation on the topic of their choosing.
PechaKucha, which started in Japan, is a way to get people together to talk about their big ideas in a friendly, non-competitive environment. The goal is that the presentations will be engaging, funny and diverse, with no two PechaKucha nights being the same.
The first Memphis PechaKucha night will be held at Crosstown Arts tonight (May 3). Doors will open at 6 p.m. and speakers will being at 7 p.m. Eight speakers will cover everything from opera to public art and the perils of building a giant disco ball.
If you can't make it tonight, the next PechaKucha is scheduled for June 21st, with more following every month or so.
