The Strangest Drink in the Downtown Core

I think I've found one of the strangest things you can buy to drink in the downtown core: the chia seed drink.

Chia Drink, Memphis,Tenn.

The Mama Chia drink isn't exactly a liquid – it's more of a sweet, gelatinous pour-able solid. It goes down smooth, but I kept wanting to chew on the chia seeds as I was drinking. City Market only had the Coconut Mango flavor in stock, but it was pretty good. It kind of tasted like oranges.

According to the label, chia seeds (the same kind grown on Chia Pets, I think) are used for their "amazing energy and natual healing powers". It was refreshing, and while I don't exactly feel like I want to run a marathon, but I could probably jog down the block without too much effort.

I'm not sure if chia seed drinks are a thing in other cities, but the only place I've seen to get them in Memphis is at City Market on the corner of Union and Main St. downtown.

  • There's also a variety of flavors at Whole Foods in east Memphis!

  • There are a few at Whole Foods, GT's Kombucha Synergy drinks. The ones with chia seeds come in grape, cherry and raspberry. Chia seeds are one of the new superfoods you can ingest. The drinks are really good!

  • I love the Mamma Chia drinks! I've tried all 6 flavors at Whole Foods and think they are amazing. I tried the GT stuff and thought it was nasty. I almost spit it through my nose because it tastes like vinegar.
