365 Things to Do in Memphis #100: Become a Mentor

If you're reading this, chances are that you're an adult. You've likely got some kind of talent, a penchant for do-goodery and maybe a little bit of free time (at least, that's how I like to think of you guys).

Assignment #100 in the 365 Things to Do in Memphis is to take your talent, time and desire to make Memphis a better place and mentor a child.

In Memphis, you've got a few options if you'd like to become a mentor:

Take 2, which mentors girls starting in the 7th and 8th grades, was started by Danielle Inez and her mother in 2008. They do group mentorship that provides support, positive reinforcement, community service and academic help for their students. Take 2 has volunteer mentors that speak at group meetings either individualy or on panels (with topics like "If I knew then" and "What guys really think").

The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis is always looking for volunteers to mentor their students, either one-on-one or in their daily afterschool programs. Boys and Girls Club mentors hang out with their mentees, go on outings, offer academic help, work with students on job skills, coach and referee sports and lead activities.

At Youth Villages, volunteers can work at special events (like the annual Soup Sunday), offer tutoring, work with kids on their job and interview skills, offer spiritual guidance and provide special birthday celebrations for the YV kids.

I would also like to add the Connect mentoring program with Memphis City Schools.  It was one of the best volunteering experiences I have ever had.  I would highly recommend it to anyone!   http://www.mcsk12.net/connect/
