Happy Friday the 13th! Here are five things to do in Memphis this weekend (plus a flying Cadillac, dogs in costumes and a bounce castle):

1. Broad Ave. Art Walk, Broad Ave. Arts District, Friday, 5 p.m., free

Tonight's Broad Ave. Art Walk promises work by 60 artists, six bands, family fun and a flying Cadillac. You can aslo see a horde of men in high heels strutting in the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser. After you check out the art openings, grab dinner at Three Angels Diner, the Cove or Jack Magoo's.

2. Memphis Redbirds vs. Oklahoma City Astros, AutoZone Park, Friday, 7 p.m., $9 – $18

Baseball season starts tonight in Memphis when the AAA Redbirds play the Oklahoma City Astros at AutoZone Park. Get there a little early tonight – the gates will open at 5 p.m. for "block party" with bands and $2 beers.

3. Rock'n'Romp, Mud Island River Park, Saturday, 2 p.m., kids free, adults $5

Spring is great because it means that some of my favorite annual events (like Rock'n'Romp) start up again after a dormant winter. At this weekend's Rock'n'Romp, Mark Stuart, Jerusalem and the Star Baskets, and Lady Trinity will be playing music for grownups at a kid-friendly event. Don't forget to pack your swim trunks – there's a fountain on Mud Island that's impossible for kids to resist.

4. Trot for Spot, Memphis Humane Society, Saturday, 10 a.m., free

Trot for Spot 2012

I love dogs in costumes, thus, I love the Humane Society's annual Trot for Spot. The event, which benefits the Humane Society, has a dog costume contest (the grand prize is an iPad), a dog / owner look-alike contest, best bark and best trick contests and more. If dogs in costumes aren't enough of an incentive, there's also going to be a bounce castle and games.

5. Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival, Wagner Pl. between Union and Beale, Sunday, free

The 20th annual Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival is all about the mudbugs. There are crawfish races, crawfish eating contests, crawfish tossing and bobbing for crawfish. There's also Zydeco music, art and and 15,000 lbs. of crawfish for purchase (a bucket will run you $20 and a beer is $4). Proceeds from the festival benefit Porter Leath.

If none of these events are your thing, there are a ton more on the blog's calendar. There's also a bonus 6th Thing to Do on the I Love Memphis Tumblr.  No matter what you do this weekend, I hope you have a blast. I'll see you at the Broad Ave. Art Walk, the roller derby bout and at Rajun Cajun.

  • The flying Cadillac certainly made me do a double take earlier this week.  When you drive off of the Sam Cooper viaduct, it really looks like it is flying!
